Things to Do in Indian Trail NC, Free and Paid

If you’re looking for things to do in Indian Trail NC, you’ll find 14 places worth the trip inside the town line itself: three town parks, an ice rink, a roller rink, a 14-screen cinema, an indoor playground, an escape room, mini golf, a paint studio, a brewery, a theater school, a basketball and volleyball gym and a library. On top of that, the Town of Indian Trail’s own calendar lists four more free events between Friday, October 23 and Saturday, December 5, 2026, starting with Spooktacular at Chestnut Square Park.

The Short Answer

You can fill a weekend in Indian Trail without leaving town. Start at Crooked Creek Park, then head indoors to Extreme Ice Center or Kate’s Skating Rink if the weather turns, and check the town calendar, because you’ve still got four free town events left in 2026.

Key numbers you can plan around, Indian Trail NC, checked October 14, 2026 (sources: Town of Indian Trail, the businesses, U.S. Census Bureau):

  • 14 places to go inside the town line, 3 of them town parks
  • 4 free town events on the calendar between October 23 and December 5
  • $20 for a public skating session at Extreme Ice Center, skate rental included
  • $10 for a round of mini golf at Trails Dynasty if you’re 7 or older
  • $5 a day for open gym at Carolina Courts, and verified town residents play free
  • 30.7% of the land in ZIP 28079 is actually inside Indian Trail

Below you’ll get the full list with what each place costs, the three parks and what’s in each, where to go when it rains, the town’s free event calendar through December, and one thing that trips up a lot of searches for this town: a lot of what has an Indian Trail address isn’t in Indian Trail at all.

What This Story Covers

What are the top things to do in Indian Trail NC?

The top things to do in Indian Trail NC are its three town parks, led by Crooked Creek Park, followed by a cluster of indoor spots along US-74 (Independence Boulevard, the highway that runs east from Charlotte through Matthews and Indian Trail to Monroe) and Old Monroe Road: Sun Valley 14 Cinemas, Kate’s Skating Rink, Playland, Extreme Ice Center and Masterpiece Escape Room. All 14 places on this list sit inside the town line as the U.S. Census Bureau draws it, which you’ll see matters more here than in most towns.

Here’s how the order works, so you can check it. The three town parks come first because the town’s park pages list fees only for shelter rentals and, at the dog park, for non-resident memberships, and because they host nearly every town event. Everything after the parks is ordered by how many Google reviews stand behind its rating, read on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, because a 4.9 on 78 reviews and a 4.6 on 2,500 reviews aren’t the same kind of signal. The cost column comes from each place’s own website, not from a directory, and where a business doesn’t publish a price, the table says so rather than guessing.

Things to do inside the Indian Trail town line, in the order explained above, with each place’s own published price where one exists. Checked October 14, 2026.

When I started putting this list together, I expected the parks to carry it, and they do. What I didn’t expect was how much of the indoor side sits in one small stretch of town: the roller rink, the escape room and the brewery all have addresses on East Independence Boulevard, the US-74 corridor. If you’re here on a rainy Saturday, that’s the part of town I’d point you to first.

Start with the three town parks

Indian Trail runs three parks, Crooked Creek, Chestnut Square and Crossing Paths, and the town’s 2026 Program Guide lists what’s in each one. If you only have one afternoon, go to Crooked Creek Park at 5900 Oakwood Lane. It carries 834 Google reviews at 4.8 stars, more than the other two parks combined, and it has the longest amenity list of the three.

We covered the parks one by one in our guide to the parks in Indian Trail, including what the town’s own website leaves off its park pages. Here’s the short version for planning a day.

Crooked Creek Park: the one to start with

The Program Guide lists four baseball and softball fields, eight pickleball courts, a nature playground with a zipline, an ADA playground, a splash pad, four reservable shelters, an 18-hole disc golf course, outdoor fitness equipment, a dog park and a paved walking track. That’s a lot of park, and it’s why the town puts its biggest events here. In 2026 Crooked Creek hosted Friday Flicks on April 10, Paws in the Park on May 2 and Family Fun Day on June 6, which the guide describes as ending with “Union County’s best fireworks show.”

The dog park works differently from the rest of the park, so check it before you load up the car. The town’s dog park page says it “requires a membership,” and you get the gate code by filling out the Dog Park Application. Residents pay nothing. Non-residents pay $10 for one dog and $15 for two or three dogs. If you’re visiting from Stallings or Monroe with a dog, that’s the one line on this page you’ll want to read twice.

There’s also a standing archery program here. The Program Guide lists archery on Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Crooked Creek, $5, for ages 8 to 15, taught by a “USA Archery-certified instructor.” The guide asks you to “confirm program details and fees on our website, itsparksandrec.com,” so check there before you go.

Chestnut Square Park: where the town throws its parties

Chestnut Square Park, at 320 Chestnut Parkway, is the town’s event lawn. Spooktacular on Friday, October 23 and Winterfest on Saturday, December 5 both happen here. The guide lists an artificial turf field, four sand volleyball courts, three tennis courts, two reservable shelters, a playground, an outdoor fitness court and a paved walking track.

One detail on the park’s own page is worth knowing if you play after work. The park is “open dawn till dusk,” and lighting for the tennis and volleyball courts “is available free of charge by periodically pressing buttons located at the light towers marked with amber bulbs.” You don’t need to reserve the lights or call anyone. You just press the button.

Crossing Paths Park: the stage

Crossing Paths Park, at 120 Blythe Drive, is the smallest of the three, and its amphitheater is the reason to go. The guide lists the amphitheater, a playground, picnic tables and a paved walking track. In 2026 it hosted Comedy Under the Stars on May 15, a Juneteenth celebration on June 19 and Rock the Trail, the town’s music night, on September 12.

If you want to hold your own gathering there, the park page lists the rates. A picnic area with a grill runs $20 for four hours for residents and $30 for non-residents. The entire park runs $25 an hour for residents and $40 an hour for non-residents, with a two-hour minimum. The page also notes that “Outside grills and bounce houses are prohibited,” which is the kind of thing you’d rather learn before the party than at it.

Is it actually in Indian Trail?

Often it isn’t, and that’s the most useful thing to know before you search this town. Only 30.7% of the land in ZIP 28079, the Indian Trail mailing ZIP, sits inside the Town of Indian Trail, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 relationship file between ZIP code areas and towns. The Town of Fairview, a separate town in Union County, holds more of that ZIP than Indian Trail does, at 33.7%.

Here’s the full split by land area. Indian Trail holds 30.7%. Fairview holds 33.7%. Unincorporated Union County, which belongs to no town at all, holds 25.0%. The remaining 10.7% is spread across six other municipalities: Hemby Bridge at 4.9%, Wesley Chapel at 1.7%, the Village of Lake Park at 1.6%, Stallings at 1.3%, Monroe at 1.2% and a sliver of Unionville. The four headline shares add to 100.1% because of rounding.

Data card: 30.7 percent of ZIP 28079 land is inside the Town of Indian Trail, 33.7 percent in the Town of Fairview, 25.0 percent unincorporated Union County and 10.7 percent in six other municipalities
How the land in ZIP 28079 splits by town, from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 ZIP code to place relationship file.

Why does that matter for a weekend plan? Because search results and AI answers for “things to do in Indian Trail” pull in anything with a 28079 address, and plenty of those places are in another town. Some AI answers to this search mix in places in Monroe, Matthews and Charlotte. You’ll still enjoy them. You just won’t be in Indian Trail.

Two fall examples make the point. Country Days Corn Maze lists its address as 416 Joe Lee Helms Road, Indian Trail, on Google, and that spot falls inside the Town of Fairview on the Census boundary map. Wise Acres Organic Farm, at 4701 Hartis Road with an Indian Trail address, falls outside every town line on the same map, in unincorporated Union County. Its website says its U-pick fields need reservations, and its separate GreenHouse spot at 5503 Poplin Road is open Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with no reservation needed.

It runs the other way too. Playland Indoor Playground lists a Monroe mailing address, 2700 Gray Fox Road, Monroe, but it sits inside the Indian Trail town line on the Census map, and its own website calls it “a local family owned indoor playground in Indian Trail, NC.” So it’s on this list, and the corn maze isn’t.

If you want to see the same address problem in a neighboring town, Stallings sits in two counties at once, which confuses addresses in the same way.

Where to go in Indian Trail when it rains

When it rains, go to Extreme Ice Center or Kate’s Skating Rink if you want to move, Sun Valley 14 if you want to sit, and Playland if you’ve got small kids with energy to burn. All four are inside the town line.

Extreme Ice Center: public skating and indoor golf in one building

Extreme Ice Center, at 4705 Indian Trail Fairview Road, runs public skating, learn-to-skate classes, hockey and figure skating. Its public skating page lists admission at $20 per session including skate rental, a $26 day pass including skate rental, and $25 for special events. Check the public skate calendar on its site before you go.

Upstairs, Tempo Golf Club runs an indoor golf simulator inside the same building. Tempo’s page says its Indian Trail location sits “on the second floor of the Extreme Ice Center,” with three simulator bays and “1,000+ virtual courses,” open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. It’s a good split day if half your group skates and half doesn’t. The rink’s site also lists Center Ice Tavern upstairs, so nobody has to leave the building to eat.

Kate’s Skating Rink: roller skating on Independence Boulevard

Kate’s Skating Rink is the roller rink, at 14500 East Independence Boulevard, and it has the second-highest review count on this list at 1,471 Google reviews. Its Indian Trail page lists Adult Nights for ages 18 and up, Toddler Times, Home School Days and a Kids Skate Free Club. One rule to know before you pack snacks: its FAQ says outside food and drinks aren’t allowed in the rink, though there’s a cafe inside.

Kate’s doesn’t publish session prices on its location page, so we’ve left that cell blank rather than quote a number from a third party. Its page also posts special-hours notices at the top, so check it the day you go.

Sun Valley 14 Cinemas and Playland

Sun Valley 14 Cinemas, at 6449 Old Monroe Road, is run by Georgia Theatre Company and has the most Google reviews of anything on this list, 2,500 at 4.6 stars. It sits on the same stretch of Old Monroe Road as the Sun Valley shopping centers, so you can turn a movie into an afternoon.

Playland is the indoor playground, with slides, obstacle courses, ball pits, a toddler area and a cafe serving coffee. Its pricing page lists two hours of play for the first child at $14.99 Monday to Thursday and $16.99 Friday to Sunday and holidays, and the last hour before closing is 50% off. It also says reservations are required on weekends and socks are required to play, which is the detail parents forget most.

Carolina Courts: a $5 open gym, free for residents

Carolina Courts, at 240 Chestnut Parkway next to Chestnut Square Park, is a basketball and volleyball facility that mostly runs clubs, camps and tournaments. The part you can walk into is open gym: its page lists basketball and volleyball open gym at “$5 per Day,” and says “Verified Indian Trail Residents Play for Free.” You need a Carolina Courts account to play, and anyone under 16 needs a parent or guardian over 21 with them. The town also uses the building for some of its own programs, including free chair volleyball for ages 55 and up on the first and third Tuesday at 10 a.m., according to the Program Guide.

If you’re new to Indian Trail, here’s what I’d tell you to do with this list: pick one park and one indoor spot for your first weekend, then put the town calendar on your phone. The free events are where you’ll actually meet people here, and the town publishes them months ahead. I’d also check any place’s address against the town line before you call it Indian Trail, because the 28079 ZIP covers a lot more ground than the town does.

Games, paint, a pint and a library card

For a night out or a slower afternoon, Indian Trail has an escape room, mini golf with an ice cream counter, a paint and sip studio, a brewery, a theater school and a county library branch, all inside the town line. None of them needs a full day, which makes them easy to pair with a park.

Masterpiece Escape Room

Masterpiece Escape Room, at 14015 East Independence Boulevard, holds a 5.0 rating on 772 Google reviews, the only perfect score on this list. Its site lists six rooms: three lighter rooms (The Deadwood Saloon, Metro Mayhem and The Coral Kingdom Aquarium) and three it calls “Scary and Immersive” (Ghastly Escapes Chapter 1: The Bagman, Missing and Wrecked). Its FAQ says players under 15 need an adult with them, players under 6 play free, and “every room is a private experience,” so you won’t be paired with strangers.

Trails Dynasty Miniature Golf and Creamery

Trails Dynasty, at 2228 Younts Road, pairs an outdoor mini golf course with “32 flavors of Hershey’s ice cream.” Its home page lists the prices: kids 3 and under free with a paying adult, $8.00 for ages 4 to 6, and $10.00 for ages 7 and up. It’s an open-air course and the owners post hour changes for weather and holidays on Facebook, so call 704-893-0093 before you drive over on a cool fall evening.

Painting with a Twist

Painting with a Twist, at 6461 Old Monroe Road, runs artist-led paint and sip classes and lists itself as BYOB. Its Indian Trail page showed three October classes when we checked, each at $40 a seat: Autumn Brook on Thursday, October 15, a late-night blacklight class on Friday, October 16, and Blood Moon on Saturday, October 17. It holds 4.9 stars on 290 Google reviews.

Sweet Union Brewing

Sweet Union Brewing, at 13717 East Independence Boulevard, brews on site and says it has “up to twelve of our own beers on tap every day.” Trivia runs Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m., free-play pinball comes once a month, and outside food is welcome in the taproom. Its posted taproom hours run Tuesday and Wednesday 3 to 10, Thursday and Friday 3 to 11, Saturday noon to 11 and Sunday noon to 8, and it’s closed Monday.

Union West Regional Library and Lanti Performing Arts

Union West Regional Library, at 123 Unionville-Indian Trail Road, is the Union County Library branch located in Indian Trail. Its posted hours are Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sunday. It’s the quiet pick on this list, and the only one here where you don’t need a ticket or a tab.

Lanti Performing Arts, at 323 Unionville-Indian Trail Road, teaches music lessons and acting classes for ages 3 to 99 and says it has served Union County “for over a decade.” Its students also put on shows the town promotes: the Program Guide lists Mary Poppins Jr. on July 11 and Mamma Mia! on August 1, 2026, both at Sun Valley High School. If you’re looking for a class rather than an outing, this is where to start.

What’s on the Indian Trail calendar through December?

Four free town events remain on Indian Trail’s 2026 calendar, plus a Veterans Day ceremony and a $7 Breakfast with Santa. Here’s each one as the town’s online calendar listed it on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, which is the version to trust over anything printed earlier in the year.

  • Spooktacular, Friday, October 23, 6 to 9 p.m., Chestnut Square Park. Free. The calendar says to “Come dressed in your costume for trunk or treat and activities.”
  • Car Show, Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Indian Trail Town Hall, 315 Matthews-Indian Trail Road. Free. To vote for a winner you bring a toy, and “all toys will be donated to Holiday Heroes.”
  • Veterans Day Ceremony, Wednesday, November 11, 6 to 8 p.m., Indian Trail Town Hall, held with American Legion Post 458 and James B. Crump VFW Post 2423.
  • Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 5, 4 to 6 p.m., on Indian Trail Road. Free.
  • Winterfest, Saturday, December 5, 6 to 9 p.m., Chestnut Square Park. Free, with “free hot chocolate, photos with Santa, and more holiday themed activities.”
  • Breakfast with Santa, Saturday, December 12, 8 a.m. to noon, VFW Post 2423 at 100 VFW Lane. $7 per person, and everyone older than 1.5 years has to register.

One thing to watch if you picked up the town’s printed 2026 Program Guide. It was published last December, and its Winterfest entry differs from the live calendar. The printed guide lists Winterfest from 4 to 9 p.m. with the parade “around Chestnut Square Park,” snow sledding and a tree lighting. The online calendar lists the parade from 4 to 6 p.m. on Indian Trail Road and Winterfest from 6 to 9 p.m., and its Winterfest description doesn’t mention sledding or a tree lighting. The guide itself says “changes may occur” and points you to the website, so plan from the online calendar and check it again the week of the event.

Between the big events, the Program Guide also lists standing programs at Town Hall: free Mahjong for ages 55 and up on Mondays at 9 a.m., line dancing on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. for $5, Zumba on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. for $5, and Kid’s Night Out on select Fridays at 6 p.m. for $7, for ages 4 to 12. The online calendar also shows a Knead and Read session on Thursday, October 22 at 10 a.m., where kids bake cinnamon rolls and hear a story. Registration runs through the town’s recreation site, and the department’s number is 704-821-8114.

If you want more fall dates across the area, our South Charlotte fall events guide covers the other towns, and our Monroe parks and recreation guide covers the city next door, which is where Playland’s mailing address points.

How we sourced this

Every fact on this page was read from the source on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Prices, hours and amenities come from each place’s own website or the Town of Indian Trail. Review counts and ratings come from Google’s listings on the same day. Town lines come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s boundary map, and ZIP shares from its 2020 relationship file.

What we left out, and why. Kate’s Skating Rink, Sun Valley 14 and Lanti Performing Arts don’t publish prices on the pages we read, so their cost cells say that rather than quoting a directory. Country Days Corn Maze is described from its Google listing only, so this page gives no season dates or prices for it. Restaurants aren’t covered here, and places within about 100 meters of the town line were left off the list because a map pin that close can land on the wrong side.
