The Best Veterinarians and Clinics in Waxhaw NC

If you’re moving to the Waxhaw area with a dog or a cat, you’ve probably already searched “best veterinarians in Waxhaw NC” and gotten a wall of five-star averages. Those tell you something about a front desk. They don’t tell you who owns the practice, who will still be standing there in three years, or which hospital has passed an outside inspection. So here’s my list instead: five clinics across Waxhaw, Weddington and Wesley Chapel, starting with the one I send my own clients to, Dr. Sandra Welsh at CityVet Marvin, who opened her own clinic on Rea Road on May 27, 2025 after more than 30 years caring for pets in the Charlotte area.

This is a ranking, not an audit. I put it in order myself, and I’ll tell you exactly what moved each one up or down so you can disagree with me where your situation differs from the average. Everything factual below comes from the practice’s own website or the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board register, checked on September 30, 2026. If your dog needs boarding and mine doesn’t, my number one might be your number three, and the entries are written so you can see that coming.

The short answer

The best veterinarian in Waxhaw NC, on my list, is Dr. Sandra Welsh at CityVet Marvin on Rea Road. She owns the practice, she has more than 30 years of small animal experience in the Charlotte area, and she lived in Marvin for 20 years before she came back to open it. The four behind her are Carolina Pets Animal Hospital in Wesley Chapel, Waxhaw Animal Hospital downtown, Providence South Animal Hospital on Providence Road South, and Weddington Animal Hospital. One thing is true of all five: not one of them posts Sunday hours or weekday hours past 8 p.m., so whichever you pick, your after hours plan is a 24 hour hospital in Matthews.

When I started putting this together I expected accreditation to settle it, the way it settles a lot of arguments in medicine. It didn’t. Only one of the five says on its own site that it’s AAHA accredited, and that practice is closed every Saturday, which rules it out for a good number of the people who ask me. That’s the shape of this whole list: every one of these clinics is good at something specific, and the right answer depends on whether you need a Saturday, a boarding kennel, an exotic, or a vet who will still be there when your puppy is nine.

Number one: Dr. Sandra Welsh at CityVet Marvin

When a client moves here with a dog or a cat and asks me where to go, I send them to Dr. Welsh. Here’s the case for it, and none of it is about review counts.

She owns it. CityVet’s own location page calls her the Lead Veterinarian Partner and says plainly, “As the clinic owner, she has intentionally built a friendly, relaxed culture focused on exceptional service and providing a stress-free experience for pets.” That matters more than it sounds. In a corporate-owned practice the person examining your animal can be reassigned to another location in eighteen months, and you start over with someone who has never met your dog. An owner is the person whose name is on the door and whose decision it is what the exam room feels like.

She has thirty years of it, and twenty of those years she lived here. CityVet’s page says she has cared for pets in the Charlotte area for more than 30 years and that Marvin “is especially meaningful to Dr. Welsh, who lived in the area for 20 years.” When the clinic opened, she put it this way: “Although we moved after our kids were grown, returning to Marvin has always been on my mind. It’s the kind of community that stays with you.” A directory badge cannot measure that, and it’s the part I’d want if I were the one relocating.

The clinic is new, and it opened as a full practice rather than growing into one. It opened on May 27, 2025 at 9923 Rea Road, and the announcement described a full range of veterinary services including preventive care, diagnostics, general and advanced surgical procedures, and dental treatments, plus full-service grooming. Her own service list on the location page runs to wellness and sick care for dogs and cats, soft tissue surgery, dentistry and laser therapy, with bathing and grooming on site.

And it opens earliest. 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, which is the earliest weekday start of the five and the difference between dropping a sick animal off before work and taking a morning off.

Where: 9923 Rea Rd, Suite 100, Waxhaw, on Rea Road heading north toward Ballantyne. The practice carries the Marvin name and the state board registers it in Waxhaw. Phone: 704-290-3727. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.

What you give up, because every entry here names one. Its location page doesn’t list x-rays or boarding, so if you need imaging on site or a kennel for a week in June, ask before you switch. Its own FAQ says patients must book online, through the app, or by phone, so it isn’t a walk-in practice. And it’s the newest clinic on this list by a wide margin, which cuts both ways: new building and new equipment, but a shorter local track record than the practices that have been on Church Street for years. The clinic names three veterinarians, all holding active North Carolina licenses, and its board inspection report on file is dated May 8, 2026.

Worth saying plainly: I refer my clients to Dr. Welsh, so read the number one spot as my recommendation rather than a neutral score. I’m not paid to send anyone there and I have no financial interest in the practice. Everything under all five entries is public record you can check line by line, and the four below are ordered on the same reasoning.

How I put this list in order

Four things moved a clinic up, in roughly this order of weight: who owns and staffs it and how long they’ve been doing it here, whether an outside body has inspected the practice and said so, how much of what a normal pet needs you can get under one roof, and whether the hours fit a working week. Review averages moved nothing. You can’t compare them across practices and you can’t check them against anything, so this follows the same rule as our Matthews daycare ranking: count something from a named source, publish it, and let the reader check the work.

What counts as the Waxhaw area here

The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board registers 10 veterinary facilities inside Waxhaw itself, and only 4 of those are small animal hospitals. Four is a short list for a town this size, and it leaves out practices that a Waxhaw address can reach in fifteen minutes, so this list runs across Waxhaw, Weddington and Wesley Chapel. ZIP codes follow mail routes rather than town limits, which is why CityVet carries the Marvin name while the state registers it in Waxhaw, and why Weddington Animal Hospital carries a Matthews mailing address in the 28104 ZIP. If one of these is closer to your house than its town name suggests, that’s normal here.

The Waxhaw practice that didn’t make the five is Passionate Paws Animal Hospital on Providence Road South, and it’s a near miss rather than a knock. It was the one Waxhaw practice listed in the Fear Free directory when I checked, it lists surgery, dentistry, digital radiography and ultrasound, and its FAQ says it handles emergencies during business hours. It lost the fifth spot on access: no weekend hours at all, and nothing past 6 p.m. If your week is flexible, look at it anyway. Its phone is 704-256-7576.

What I deliberately left out

Two things. Review stars, for the reason above. And the board’s complaint documents that aren’t findings of a violation. The board posts some outcomes including letters of caution, and its own rule issues one of those when the Committee on Investigations finds no probable cause for a disciplinary hearing (21 NCAC 66 .0601). A document that explicitly records no probable cause is not evidence anybody did anything wrong, so ranking a practice down for one would be unfair and I didn’t. Every veterinarian I ran through the board’s verification portal for the five practices below holds an active North Carolina license. You can look up any vet yourself in about a minute, and the steps are in the first month list further down.

The other four, ranked

Any of these may suit you better than my number one does, and for two specific needs, boarding and a Saturday, one of them definitely will. Hours and services come from each practice’s own website on September 30, 2026, so call before you rely on them.

2. Carolina Pets Animal Hospital, Wesley Chapel

Where: 5828 Waxhaw Indian Trail Road, Wesley Chapel, NC 28104. Phone: (704) 220-0226. Hours: Monday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday.

This is the one with the credential. Carolina Pets says on its own accreditations page that it holds American Animal Hospital Association accreditation, that “only 15% of all animal hospitals in North America are accredited by AAHA,” and that accreditation “means we’ve passed a voluntary inspection of more than 900 standards.” None of the other four on this list claims accreditation, and one of them carefully says membership instead, which is a different thing. It also runs as an American Association of Feline Practitioners Cat Friendly Practice, which is the thing to know if the hard part of your week is getting a cat into a carrier.

It names five staff veterinarians, Dr. Heather Meyers, Dr. Katie O’Hara, Dr. Victoria Jenkins, Dr. Sarah Carroll and Dr. Carolyn Belling, which is the deepest bench of the five, and its service list runs past the usual into internal medicine, imaging, acupuncture, hospice and end of life care, and pot belly pig care. The Monday schedule to 8 p.m. is the latest weekday hour anywhere on this list.

What you give up: both weekend days. Closed Saturday and closed Sunday is the strictest schedule of the five, and it’s the single reason this practice is second rather than first for most of the people who ask me. If your only free time is Saturday morning, this is not your practice no matter what it has on the wall.

3. Waxhaw Animal Hospital, Waxhaw

Where: 601 N Church St, Waxhaw, about 0.4 miles in a straight line from the corner of Main and Broome downtown. Phone: 704-843-2269. Hours: its current site leaves the hours field blank; the older practice page lists Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., so confirm by phone.

If one thing decides it for you and that thing is services, start here. It’s the only practice on this list whose own site lists all six of what I’d call the standard set: surgery, dental care, x-rays, ultrasound, exotic pets covering birds, reptiles and small mammals, and boarding, which its services page describes as “a large boarding facility for cats and dogs of all sizes.” Nobody else on this list lists boarding at all. If you have a bearded dragon, a cockatiel, or a two-week trip in July, this is the entry to read twice. Its staff page names two veterinarians, both with active North Carolina licenses, and it’s the downtown practice, walkable from the middle of Waxhaw.

What you give up: a current, published schedule, which is a strange thing to have to say about a practice this established. Its services page also says the hospital and doctors are “members of organizations such as AAHA,” and neither that page nor its older practice page says accredited. AAHA itself describes its guidelines as open to professionals “regardless of their AAHA membership status,” so read member as member. Its board inspection report on file is dated January 15, 2025, the oldest of the five.

4. Providence South Animal Hospital, Waxhaw

Where: 3520 Providence Rd S, Waxhaw. Phone: 704-843-0208. Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

This is the access pick. Its about page lists “Same-Day & Multi-Pet Appointments” as a hospital feature, and its emergencies page says that for “an emergency or urgent care need during regular business hours” you should call or bring your pet in. Saturday morning plus a written same day policy is the combination nobody else here puts in writing, and if you’ve ever had a dog start limping on a Friday night you know what that’s worth. It lists five of the six standard services, including soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dentistry, digital x-rays, ultrasound, and exotic mammals such as rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas.

Its staff page names two veterinarians, both with active North Carolina licenses, and if your pet comes apart at the vet it’s worth knowing that one of them, Dr. Caroline Varner, says in her bio that she’s individually Fear Free Certified. Its board inspection report on file is dated August 3, 2026, the most recent of the five.

What you give up: boarding, which it doesn’t list, and independence. It’s part of the PetVet Care Centers network, so the ownership question at the top of this page cuts the other way here. Its after hours page sends you to Carolina Veterinary Specialists.

5. Weddington Animal Hospital, Weddington

Where: 13667 Providence Road, in the 28104 ZIP with a Matthews mailing address, on Providence Road between Weddington and Matthews. Phone: (704) 847-8466. Hours: Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed weekends.

Three veterinarians on a small independent practice, which is a better ratio than anything else on this list outside Wesley Chapel. Dr. Ed Faulkner, Dr. Meg Walker and Dr. Nathan Williams. Dr. Walker grew up in Weddington a few miles from the practice and came back to work there, which is the same quality I ranked first at CityVet, and she’s certified in acupuncture through the Chi Institute, so complementary care here is a real menu item rather than a line on a website. Dr. Williams came out of the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2020. The 7:30 a.m. start ties CityVet for the earliest on this list.

What you give up: weekends, again, and Friday lunchtime, which the practice closes. It’s also the farthest from downtown Waxhaw of the five, so check the drive from your actual address rather than from the town center before you commit.

Where is the nearest 24 hour emergency vet to Waxhaw?

The nearest emergency hospital that says on its own page it’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week is Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Matthews, 11.7 miles in a straight line from the corner of Main and Broome streets in downtown Waxhaw. None of the five clinics above lists overnight or Sunday hours on its own site, and only Carolina Pets runs past 6 p.m. on any weekday, so this is the stop you plan for. Distances below are straight line only, between geocoded addresses, not drive distances or drive times; your road trip will be longer.

One closer option needs a warning. BluePearl Pet Hospital’s South Charlotte location at 2440 Plantation Center Dr in Matthews is 11.2 miles away in a straight line, slightly nearer than Carolina Veterinary Specialists, and its page says “we’re ready 24/7.” But the emergency schedule printed on that same page reads Monday 7 a.m. to 12 a.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursday through Sunday 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. That helps you on a weekend evening and not at 2 a.m., so call first. Passionate Paws also lists Charlotte Animal Referral and Emergency on Latrobe Drive as an after hours partner.

What to do in your first month here

Here’s my order. Do the first two before the move.

1. Save the 24 hour number. Put Carolina Veterinary Specialists Matthews at (704) 815-3939 in your phone, and the Rock Hill location too.
2. Ask your current vet for records. Every practice above will want vaccination history. Passionate Paws’ FAQ, for example, says heartworm prevention for a new client needs a current written prescription from your previous vet, or records showing a recent heartworm test.
3. Look up the vet. The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board publishes each licensee’s public record on its free verification portal: pick “Veterinarian,” type a last name, and you’ll see the license status and any documents the board has posted. For AAHA accreditation, check AAHA’s hospital locator rather than a practice’s own wording.
4. Match the hours to your week. If you’re in a Charlotte office a couple of days a week, a Saturday morning slot may matter more to you than anything else on this list.
5. Book a healthy visit first. A wellness exam when nothing’s wrong gets you into the system before the day something is.

Can you just walk into a vet in Waxhaw?

Not at every practice. As of September 27, 2026, CityVet Marvin says on its own FAQ that every patient needs an appointment. Providence South lists same day appointments and says to call or come in for an urgent need during business hours, and Passionate Paws says it handles emergencies during its business hours. Call ahead either way.

Is there a 24 hour emergency vet near Waxhaw NC?

Not in Waxhaw itself. The nearest hospital whose own posted schedule runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week is Carolina Veterinary Specialists at 4099 Campus Ridge Rd in Matthews, 11.7 miles from downtown Waxhaw in a straight line. BluePearl’s South Charlotte location in Matthews is slightly closer at 11.2 miles and its page says it is ready 24/7, but the emergency schedule printed on that same page does not run 24 hours on every day of the week, so call before you drive. After those, Carolina Veterinary Specialists has a Rock Hill location at 13.2 miles and VEG is in Charlotte at 16.2 miles, all checked September 27, 2026.

Which vets in Waxhaw see exotic pets?

Two of the four Waxhaw animal hospitals list exotic pets on their own sites as of September 27, 2026. Waxhaw Animal Hospital lists birds, reptiles and small mammals, and Providence South lists exotic mammals such as rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas. Call first to confirm the species you have.

Which vet in Waxhaw offers payment plans?

As of September 27, 2026, Providence South lists CareCredit and Scratchpay, CityVet Marvin lists CareCredit, Affirm and Scratch Pay, and Passionate Paws accepts CareCredit and the H3 WellnessPlus Card but says it does not run payment plans itself. Waxhaw Animal Hospital does not list financing on its site.

Is there a mobile vet in Waxhaw NC?

Yes. The state board registers two house call services for dogs and cats in Waxhaw: The Visiting Veterinarian Mobile Service, which makes house calls by appointment Monday through Friday, and Lap of Love, which does hospice and at home euthanasia only.
