If you have gone looking for a pediatrician in Matthews, you have probably landed on a directory listing twenty or thirty names and no way to tell which ones are actually here. That is a fair impression to come away with, because plenty of those offices really are a short drive away. The number that surprises people is the one for Matthews itself: four. Four pediatric primary care practices carry a Matthews street address, and all four sit inside the Matthews town line, which I checked on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 against Mecklenburg County’s own jurisdiction boundary and the county’s medical facilities layer.
The Short Answer
There are four pediatric primary care practices with a Matthews, NC street address, and every one of them is inside the town line. They are very different sizes, from twelve physicians down to one, and only one of them opens on a Saturday at its Matthews address.
Key numbers, Matthews NC, checked Wednesday, October 7, 2026 (sources: Mecklenburg County GIS, each practice’s own site, the American Board of Pediatrics, the US Census Bureau):
- 4 pediatric primary care practices with a Matthews street address, all 4 inside the town line
- 1 of the 4 opens Saturday at its Matthews address, 9 to 11 a.m.
- 67 medical facilities of every kind sit inside the Matthews town line on the county map
- 25 physicians across the four offices, 24 of them matched to an active board certificate
- 12 physicians at the largest office, 1 at the smallest
- 1.40% of ZIP 28104’s land is inside Matthews, against 71.80% for ZIP 28105
Below you get all four in order, with the hours each one publishes, how many physicians work there, what the board certification check turned up, and who is taking new patients. You also get the reason a Matthews mailing address is a poor guide to any of it, which is the part that trips up almost everyone moving in from out of state.

How many pediatricians are in Matthews NC?
Four, and all four are inside the Matthews town line: Novant Health Matthews Children’s Clinic on Matthews Township Parkway, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Charlotte Pediatrics on North Trade Street, Novant Health Township Pediatrics on East Matthews Street, and Covenant Pediatrics on Monroe Road. No page I could find on the first page of Google states that number, which is why it is worth saying plainly.
I checked it two ways that do not depend on each other. The first was Google Places, the list most directories are built on. The second was Mecklenburg County’s own open mapping server, where I pulled the county’s medical facilities layer and asked it for everything inside the Matthews boundary polygon from the jurisdictions layer. That returned 67 medical facilities of all kinds inside the town line, five of them carrying a pediatric or children’s name. Four are the offices above. The fifth is Novant Health Pediatric Gastroenterology, a subspecialty practice at the same Matthews Township Parkway address, and it is not where you take a child for a well visit, so it is out.
Both routes returned the same four, which matters more than either route on its own: a directory can miss an office and a county layer can lag an opening, and the two agreeing is a stronger answer than either gives alone.
| Practice | Providers | Saturday | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novant Health Matthews Children’s Clinic | 12 physicians, 1 lactation consultant | 9 to 11 a.m. | Novant Health clinic page and provider finder |
| Atrium Health Levine Children’s Charlotte Pediatrics | 8 physicians, 2 advanced practice | Closed, sick visits at SouthPark | Atrium Health location page and provider search |
| Covenant Pediatrics | 1 physician | Closed | Covenant Pediatrics own site |
| Novant Health Township Pediatrics | 4 physicians | Closed | Novant Health clinic page and provider finder |
Two things surprised me here. The first is how far apart these four offices are in size, from twelve physicians down to one, inside a town you can cross in ten minutes. The second is that the weekend question, the one I expected to answer in a sentence, has a trick in it: one of the four advertises Saturday sick visits and does not hold them in Matthews.

Does a Matthews mailing address mean you are in Matthews?
Often it does not, and if you are moving in this is the most useful thing here. Two ZIP codes read “Matthews, NC” on an envelope and only one of them is mostly Matthews. The US Census Bureau publishes a file measuring how much of each ZIP code’s land sits inside each town, and the gap between the two is not close.
ZIP 28105 is 71.80% Matthews by land area, with the rest Charlotte at 15.77% and Mint Hill at 7.79%. ZIP 28104, which also addresses as Matthews, is 1.40% Matthews: 43.20% Weddington, 25.59% Stallings, 9.60% Indian Trail, 7.25% Wesley Chapel, and almost all of it in Union County rather than Mecklenburg.
So if your Matthews mailing address is in 28104, the odds are better than nineteen in twenty that you are not in Matthews at all. You are in Union County, which means a different county government, a different school district and a different set of county services. That is worth knowing before you build a short list of anything, not just a pediatrician. We wrote up the same problem one town over in what county Stallings NC is in, and again in why Sardis Forest is a Charlotte neighborhood rather than a Matthews one.
It also explains why directory pages are a poor guide here. One page on the first screen of Google for “pediatricians in Matthews NC” the day I checked brands itself on ZIP 28104, the one that is 1.40% Matthews. It is not lying to you. It is counting the wrong places, because it counts by mailing address and the mailing address is not the town.
All four offices below are in 28105, and I did not take the ZIP’s word for that either. I ran each one’s coordinates against the Matthews boundary polygon, one at a time, and all four came back inside a town line enclosing 10,989.50 acres.
How these four were ranked
With only four offices the order matters less than what sits behind it, so here is the whole method in one place. Public star ratings are one input and never the only one, because a four review office and a four hundred review office are not measuring the same thing. The criteria, in this order:
- Weekend access at the Matthews address. Whether you can be seen on a Saturday without driving out of town. It is the only criterion on which the four genuinely differ.
- Bench depth, with certification. How many physicians work at that address, and whether all of them carry an active General Pediatrics certificate. Depth decides whether a sick child gets a slot today when your own doctor is booked.
- What it adds for a newborn. Lactation support on staff, a nurse line, office tours, separate space for sick and well visits.
- Taking new patients. All four are, so it separates nobody this month and is worth re-checking before you call.
- Public ratings and review counts. From Google, pulled the same day, as one input among the rest.
Two things I left out on purpose. The Charlotte Magazine Top Doctors list, because the page it lives on would not open for me while I was writing, and a figure I cannot read at its source does not go in. And disciplinary records: a medical board action is a real public document, and hanging a stale one on an office that is still seeing patients is not a ranking, so the last section shows you how to look that up yourself. The certification counts below name nobody either, for a reason I set out when I get to them.

The four pediatric practices in Matthews, in order
Each one with its address, published hours, provider count from its own system’s directory, and the Google rating and review count as they read on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
1. Novant Health Matthews Children’s Clinic
The only one of the four you can walk into on a Saturday without leaving Matthews. Its own page publishes Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., plus Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and closed Sunday. You will find it at 1401 Matthews Township Parkway, Suite 100, across from Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, phone 704-384-1080.
It is also the deepest bench in town by a distance. Novant’s provider finder returns thirteen providers at that address: twelve physicians, all listing Pediatrics as their primary specialty, plus a board certified lactation consultant. That last one is unusual, and it matters in the first six weeks when feeding is most of what you want to talk about and nobody is sleeping. Eleven of the twelve physicians carry a Pediatrics board certification on Novant’s own pages.
Ten of the twelve are listed as accepting new patients outright and two as may be accepting, which in practice means a phone call rather than a closed door. The clinic describes itself as caring for children “from birth through the teen years”, and Google rates it 4.7 from 207 reviews, the second largest review base here.
The tradeoff is the one that comes with every twelve physician office: on a sick visit you will often see whoever has the slot rather than the doctor whose name is on your chart. For some households that is the point, because the slot exists. For others it is exactly why they pick one of the smaller offices below. Read the whole page: Novant Health Matthews Children’s Clinic.
2. Atrium Health Levine Children’s Charlotte Pediatrics
Second on bench depth, with one thing to read carefully before you count on it. The office is at 332 N. Trade St., Suite 1500, phone 704-512-6820, and its published facility hours run Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no Saturday row on that page.
The practice does advertise Saturday sick visits, and its own page is specific about where they happen: “Saturday sick visits are available for all Atrium Health Levine Children’s Charlotte Pediatrics patients at our SouthPark office. Hours are Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and scheduling opens at 6 p.m. the night before.” SouthPark is roughly a twenty minute drive from downtown Matthews on a quiet morning. That is a genuine benefit if you are already a patient there, and it is not a Saturday appointment in Matthews, which is the distinction worth drawing before you plan a weekend around it.
Atrium’s provider search for the Matthews location returns eleven results, one of which is the office itself. The other ten are providers: eight physicians and two advanced practice providers, a physician assistant and a certified pediatric nurse practitioner. Every one of them is listed as accepting new patients and as treating children only. All eight physicians matched an active General Pediatrics certificate in the board’s own database.
The page also lists a 24 hour nurse phone line, same day sick visits, and office tours for anyone expecting a newborn or new to the area, which is worth using while you are still deciding. Atrium describes Levine Children’s Hospital, which this practice feeds into, as the Charlotte region’s only children’s hospital recognized among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report. That is Atrium’s wording about its own hospital, and I am passing it along as their claim rather than checking the ranking, because the publisher’s site would not open from here. Google rates the Matthews office 4.5 from 176 reviews. Full details: Atrium Health Levine Children’s Charlotte Pediatrics, Matthews.
3. Covenant Pediatrics
The strongest public record of the four by a wide margin, and the smallest office in town. Covenant Pediatrics sits at 10806 Monroe Road, phone 704-321-5700, and it is one physician, Dr. Anthonia Emezie. Google rates it 4.9 from 397 reviews, nearly twice the review base of the next busiest office and the highest score of the four.
If public ratings were the only criterion this would be first, and it would not be close. The reason it sits third is a tradeoff rather than a shortcoming. A one physician office is a different thing, not a worse one: you see the same doctor at every visit, which is what a lot of households say they want and very few larger offices can promise. What you give up is the slot on a day that physician is booked, away, or out sick.
Published hours run Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday closed. One detail on the practice’s own site is worth your attention, because none of the other three state it: the office keeps “waiting rooms dedicated to sick and well visits and now also have exam rooms dedicated to well and sick”. Separating sick from well at the exam room and not only in the lobby is worth asking about anywhere you go, and this is the only one of the four that publishes it. Dr. Emezie has held an active General Pediatrics certificate since 2005. See the site: Covenant Pediatrics.
4. Novant Health Township Pediatrics
A four physician office in the oldest part of town, near the corner of Matthews-Mint Hill Road and Trade Street, next to Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. You will find it at 201 East Matthews Street, Suite 100, and the phone number is 704-847-0572. Published hours run Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday closed.
It lands fourth on the criteria above rather than on anything it does badly. Novant’s provider finder returns four physicians at the address, all listing Pediatrics, and all four are shown as accepting new patients. All four matched an active General Pediatrics certificate, a clean sweep that only two of the four offices managed. Google rates it 4.5 from 88 reviews, the smallest review base here, which has more to do with being the smallest Novant office in town than with the care.
One practical difference worth knowing: Township states that it serves “children from birth to age 20”, which is a longer runway than most pediatric offices publish and matters if you have a teenager heading to college and would rather not change doctors mid way. More here: Novant Health Township Pediatrics.
What the board certification check found
Twenty five physicians work across the four Matthews addresses, and twenty four of them matched an active General Pediatrics certificate in the American Board of Pediatrics verification database. One name returned no record at all, not a lapsed one and not an expired one, which is a different thing from failing a check.
Here is why that matters, and why you will not find a name attached to it. A physician can practice general pediatrics in North Carolina without an ABP certificate, because it is a voluntary credential on top of a state licence rather than a substitute for one. A blank result can also mean certification by a different board, or a different surname in the database than the one the office publishes. Printing a name beside it would tell you something that is probably untrue about somebody still seeing patients every day, so the count is the fair form of that finding.
By office, counting physicians only and setting aside the physician assistant, the nurse practitioner and the lactation consultant:
- Atrium Health Levine Children’s Charlotte Pediatrics: 8 physicians, 8 matched.
- Novant Health Township Pediatrics: 4 physicians, 4 matched.
- Covenant Pediatrics: 1 physician, 1 matched.
- Novant Health Matthews Children’s Clinic: 12 physicians, 11 matched.
One wrinkle worth explaining rather than hiding. Most matched certificates read “Currently Certified, Meeting MOC Requirements”, where MOC is Maintenance of Certification, the board’s ongoing programme. One reads “Certified, Permanent”, first issued in 1987. Permanent certificates predate the move to time limited ones and do not expire, so if you see one it tells you when a physician trained and nothing about their record.
I went into the certification check expecting it to separate the four and it mostly did not, which is a useful result in itself. Twenty four out of twenty five across a whole town tells you the baseline here is high and this is not the thing to agonize over. Spend the time instead on the question nobody publishes: how fast you can get a sick child seen on a Tuesday afternoon in February. Ask it on the phone, because no database holds it.

Weighing Matthews against the towns around it?
I live a few minutes down the road and sell here every week. Ask me what the map actually changes.
Saturday hours, sick visits and new patients
One of the four opens on a Saturday at its Matthews address: Novant Health Matthews Children’s Clinic, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Two hours, once a week. If weekend access decides this for you, it is already decided and the rest here is detail.
Atrium’s Charlotte Pediatrics is the one to read carefully. It runs Saturday sick visits for its patients and holds them at SouthPark rather than Matthews, 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with scheduling opening at 6 p.m. the night before. That is a real benefit, and it is also a drive up Providence Road with a sick child in the back, so know which one you are signing up for. Covenant and Township both publish Saturday and Sunday as closed.
Weekday same day sick visits are a different question, and all four offer some version of it, which is why I did not rank on it. Three of them back it with a bench big enough to make it likely on a bad week. Use this on the phone: how fast can you see a sick child on a weekday afternoon in February, when every pediatric office in the Carolinas is at its busiest.
On new patients, all four are open as of this check. Ten of the twelve at Matthews Children’s Clinic are listed as accepting outright and two as may be accepting, all four at Township are accepting, all ten providers at Atrium’s Matthews office are shown as accepting, and Covenant takes new patients through its own booking page. An office can close to new patients in a week, so confirm it when you call.
The practices just outside Matthews
Four is the count inside the town line, not the count inside a sensible driving radius, and the radius is the number that matters to most households. If your address is in the part of 28104 that reads Matthews but sits in Union County, several of these will be closer to your front door than anything on Trade Street. All were verified at their own addresses on the same day.
- Novant Health Child & Adolescent Medical Group, Wesley Chapel, 6488 Weddington Road, in Union County. The natural choice for the Weddington and Wesley Chapel side of 28104.
- Atrium Health Levine Children’s Pediatrics Indian Trail, 6030 W Highway 74, Indian Trail.
- Thrive Pediatrics and Wellness, 3800 Meeting Street, Indian Trail, an independent practice.
- Atrium Health Levine Children’s Rea Village Pediatrics, 11530 Providence Road, Charlotte, toward Ballantyne.
- Novant Health Waverly Pediatrics & Primary Care, 11840 Southmore Drive, Charlotte, in the Waverly development off Providence Road.
If you are closer to Waxhaw, the same exercise one town over is in our guide to pediatric practices near Waxhaw, which had to cover a wider radius because only one office has a Waxhaw address at all. Matthews is the opposite case, and that is worth noticing while you weigh towns: on this one errand, Matthews is better supplied than most of what surrounds it.
How do you check a pediatrician yourself?
All of this is public and it took an afternoon. Here is the short version so you can run it on any office, in any town, including ones I did not cover.
Confirm the town, not the mailing address. An address on an envelope settles nothing. Mecklenburg County publishes its jurisdiction boundaries at meckgis.mecklenburgcountync.gov, and the Census Bureau’s ZIP to place file is the plainer route if you only want to know how much of a ZIP sits in a town.
Check the certificate at the board, not at the office. The American Board of Pediatrics runs a free public tool at certverification.abp.org. Search a physician by name and it returns the certificate area, the status and the date it was first issued. Thirty seconds per name.
Check the licence separately. The certificate and the licence are two different things. The North Carolina Medical Board publishes a licensee lookup at ncmedboard.org, which is also where any public board action appears. This is the one I would not skip, and the one I deliberately did not publish results from, because it is yours to read in context rather than mine to summarize.
Read the hours on the office’s own page. Not a directory and not a search snippet. Two of the four have hours on Google that do not tell the whole story, and Atrium’s Saturday detail exists only on its own page.
Then call and ask the three things no database holds: how quickly a sick child gets seen on a busy weekday, whether sick and well visits are separated at the exam room or only in the lobby, and whether you can tour before the baby arrives. The same approach runs through our Matthews daycare comparison, and once you are settled, start with the Matthews parks guide.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatricians in Matthews NC
How many pediatricians are in Matthews NC?
Four, and all four sit inside the Matthews town line: the Novant Health clinic on Matthews Township Parkway, the Atrium Health Levine Childrens office on North Trade Street, Novant Health Township Pediatrics on East Matthews Street, and Covenant Pediatrics on Monroe Road. Across those four you have a choice of 25 physicians. A fifth pediatric office inside the town line is a gastroenterology subspecialty practice rather than primary care, so it is not counted here.
Which pediatrician in Matthews NC is open on Saturday?
One of the four opens on a Saturday at its Matthews address: the Novant Health clinic on Matthews Township Parkway, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Atrium Health Levine Childrens practice runs Saturday sick visits for its own patients, but you would drive to its SouthPark office in Charlotte rather than to Matthews, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The other two publish Saturday and Sunday as closed.
Are pediatricians in Matthews NC taking new patients?
All four were open to new patients when this was checked on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. At the largest office, 10 of the 12 physicians are listed as accepting and 2 as may be accepting. All four physicians at Township Pediatrics are accepting, and all ten providers at the Atrium office are shown as accepting. That is a snapshot rather than a standing fact, so confirm it on the phone.
Is a Matthews NC mailing address the same as living in Matthews?
Often it is not, so check your ZIP. Two of them address as Matthews. ZIP 28105 is 71.80 percent inside the Matthews town line by land area. ZIP 28104 is only 1.40 percent inside it, and most of it sits in Union County rather than Mecklenburg, split mainly between Weddington at 43.20 percent, Stallings at 25.59 percent, Indian Trail at 9.60 percent and Wesley Chapel at 7.25 percent. Those shares come from the US Census Bureau file measuring how much of each ZIP code falls inside each town.
How do I look up whether a pediatrician is board certified?
The American Board of Pediatrics runs a free public verification tool at certverification.abp.org. Search by name and you get the certificate area, the current status and the date it was first issued. A certificate is a voluntary credential on top of a state medical licence rather than a substitute for one, so check the licence separately at ncmedboard.org, the North Carolina Medical Board, which is also where any public board action appears.
What pediatric practices are near Matthews but not in it?
The closest ones outside the town line are Novant Health Child and Adolescent Medical Group in Wesley Chapel on Weddington Road, Atrium Health Levine Childrens Pediatrics Indian Trail on West Highway 74, Thrive Pediatrics and Wellness on Meeting Street in Indian Trail, Atrium Health Levine Childrens Rea Village Pediatrics on Providence Road in Charlotte, and Novant Health Waverly Pediatrics and Primary Care on Southmore Drive in Charlotte. If your address sits in the Union County part of ZIP 28104, several of those are closer to you than anything in downtown Matthews.

How we sourced this
Checked Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Every figure traces to a document you can open yourself.
- The count and the town line: Mecklenburg County’s open mapping server at meckgis.mecklenburgcountync.gov, the jurisdictions layer for the Matthews boundary and the medical facilities layer for what sits inside it. Each office’s coordinates were tested against the boundary one at a time.
- The ZIP shares: the US Census Bureau 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Area to place relationship file, published at census.gov, measured by land area.
- Hours, addresses and age ranges: each practice’s own page. Matthews Children’s Clinic, Township Pediatrics, Charlotte Pediatrics Matthews and Covenant Pediatrics.
- Provider counts and new patient status: the Novant Health provider finder and the Atrium Health provider search, filtered to each office.
- Board certification: the American Board of Pediatrics verification database, searched by name.
- Ratings and review counts: Google, pulled the same day.
What we left out, and why. The Charlotte Magazine and Castle Connolly Top Doctors list, because the page would not open from here and a figure I cannot read at its source does not get published. Medical board disciplinary records, because naming a stale one beside an office that is still seeing patients is not a ranking, and the section above shows you where to look instead. Insurance networks, which change by plan and by year. The name behind the one physician with no board record. This describes public records. It is not medical advice and it is not an endorsement of any office or physician.
