If you’ve searched for the best restaurants in Waxhaw NC, you’ve already seen the lists: a dozen names, a star average beside each one, and no way to tell which of them are still serving dinner. It’s true those lists usually get the famous downtown names right. But when I checked all 57 restaurant permits that Union County Environmental Health lists with a Waxhaw address on September 27, 2026, 9 of them had no county inspection in the past 12 months, and the older public inspection portal, which still loads, shows no Union County inspection at all after April 9, 2024.
The Short Answer
Your first stop by this method is Maxwell’s Tavern, which ranks first because it’s named in more of the qualifying news pieces than any other eligible Waxhaw restaurant, going back to August 2015. The ten were chosen from 17 independent, currently inspected restaurants, which were themselves narrowed from 57 county restaurant permits with a Waxhaw address.
Key numbers you can check, Waxhaw NC, September 27, 2026 (sources: Union County Environmental Health, Axios Charlotte, Charlotte Magazine, WSOC):
- 57 restaurant permits with a Waxhaw address on the county portal
- 9 permits with no county inspection since September 27, 2025
- 17 restaurants left after every exclusion
- 10 of 10 ranked restaurants graded A, with latest scores from 94 to 100
- April 9, 2024: the last Union County inspection on the older CDP public portal
So this ranking starts from the county’s own record. You’ll see how the list was built, the ten that came out on top and the record that decided each spot, which ones are downtown and which days they close, and the holes the checking turned up.

The short answer
The best restaurants in Waxhaw NC, ranked from the public record rather than from star ratings, are led by Maxwell’s Tavern, Provisions Waxhaw, Mary O’Neill’s Irish Pub, Emmet’s Social Table and Cork & Ale, all five on or beside Main Street downtown. Hacienda El Rey, Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ, Asian Grill, Stacks Kitchen and Bistro D’Antonio round out the ten, and all ten carry an A on their latest Union County inspection.
The ten, in rank order, with the record that placed each one so you can check it. Scores and dates from the Union County Environmental Health portal; days closed from each restaurant’s own page; all checked September 27, 2026.
| Rank and restaurant | What placed it | Latest county score | Downtown? | Closed, per its own page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Maxwell’s Tavern | 3 editorial pieces, since 2015 or earlier | 99.5 (A), June 17, 2026 | Yes | Monday |
| 2. Provisions Waxhaw | 2 pieces, since 2015 or earlier | 100 (A), September 14, 2026 | Yes | Open daily, breakfast and lunch |
| 3. Mary O’Neill’s Irish Pub | 2 pieces, open about 2017 | 96 (A), June 16, 2026 | Yes | Open daily |
| 4. Emmet’s Social Table | 2 pieces, on the county record by 2021 | 96.5 (A), June 17, 2026 | Yes | Open daily |
| 5. Cork & Ale | 1 piece, on the county record by 2019 | 100 (A), April 9, 2026 | Yes | Sunday and Monday |
| 6. Hacienda El Rey | Founded 2000, per its own page | 94 (A), August 31, 2026 | No | Its page conflicts |
| 7. Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ | On the county record by 2020 | 99.5 (A), September 24, 2026 | No | Open daily |
| 8. Asian Grill | On the county record by 2021, score 99.5 | 99.5 (A), September 24, 2026 | No | Its page conflicts on Monday |
| 9. Stacks Kitchen | On the county record by 2021, score 99 | 99 (A), April 20, 2026 | No | Open daily, 6 AM to 3 PM |
| 10. Bistro D’Antonio | On the county record by 2021, score 98.5 | 98.5 (A), June 24, 2026 | No | Monday |
I didn’t want to hand you one more list of star averages, because you can get those anywhere and they can’t tell you whether a place is still open. So I started from the county’s permit list instead. What surprised me was how many names from the popular lists no longer have a current inspection behind them, and how many restaurants that do have one don’t publish their own hours anywhere I could confirm. If you’re planning a first visit to Waxhaw, use the table above as a short list you can trust today, then click through to the county record before you go.

How the ranking works, and what it leaves out on purpose
This ranking of Waxhaw restaurants was built on September 27, 2026 from the Union County Environmental Health inspection portal, the restaurants’ own websites, dated local press and named editorial coverage. It uses no Google, Yelp or Tripadvisor stars, which you can’t compare or check. Here’s the method, so you can rebuild the list yourself.
The universe. I started with every permit the county portal files under “Restaurants (including Drink Stand)” with Waxhaw as the city: 57 restaurant permits, covering 56 restaurants because Capricci’s True Italian holds an older and a current permit at the same address. Pizza counters like Domino’s and Papa John’s, most grocery deli counters and food trucks carry other permit types, so they never enter the count.
What “Waxhaw” means here. A restaurant is in the universe when the county’s permit record gives its city as Waxhaw. That’s narrower than a Waxhaw mailing address, and the difference is real. ZIP codes follow mail routes, not town limits. El Tecate Mexican Restaurant prints “1619 Providence Road South #210, Waxhaw, NC 28173” on its own site, while the county permit for the same restaurant lists the city as Marvin, so it sits outside this list. If you’re house hunting on a 28173 address, your mailing address and your town can be two different answers.
The exclusions, applied in this order:
- No county inspection in the 12 months before September 27, 2026. That removed 9 permits, which you’ll find named below.
- National chains, franchise brands and any brand with more than three locations. That removed 18 restaurants, from Arby’s and McDonald’s to regional groups like Greco Fresh Grille, whose own site lists ten locations, and El Vallarta, whose own site lists four.
- Grocery kitchens, a private club and an institutional cafeteria you couldn’t walk into for dinner. That removed 4: Lowes Foods Deli, Triveni Supermarket, The Club at Longview and JAARS Cafeteria.
- No current hours on a page of the restaurant’s own. That removed 9 more.
That left 17 restaurants. Stacks Kitchen lists three locations on its locations page (Waxhaw, Matthews and Lancaster, South Carolina), which is the ceiling this method allows.
The ranking order. The 17 were sorted by three records, in this order, with each one only breaking ties in the one above it:
- Named editorial recognition. How many Charlotte-area news pieces covering downtown Waxhaw or its restaurants as a whole name the restaurant. Four qualified: two from Axios Charlotte (2015 and 2023), one from Charlotte Magazine and one from WSOC (2026). National relocation sites, blogs and single-restaurant opening stories don’t count; the sourcing section names two left out.
- The earliest year the restaurant can be shown operating in Waxhaw. Taken from its own site, dated press, or the county’s archived inspection record, whichever reaches back furthest. Older ranks higher.
- The latest county sanitation score. Higher ranks higher.
Why recognition first? It’s the one input where an outsider chose to write about the place. The score comes last because all 17 are graded A, and a half point says little about dinner. One limit you should know: the archived county inspections mostly start in mid-2021, so “on the county record by 2021” means a restaurant was open by then, which isn’t the same as opening then.
The best restaurants in Waxhaw NC, one by one
Each entry gives the record that placed it, what it serves in its own words or a named outlet’s, and the days it closes. Every score links to the county inspection.
1. Maxwell’s Tavern
Maxwell’s sits at 112 East South Main Street, and it’s the only eligible restaurant named in three separate editorial pieces. Axios Charlotte’s 2015 Main Street piece called it “Waxhaw’s sports bar,” Charlotte Magazine’s food tour opened with diners who “wait for a table at Maxwell’s Tavern,” and Axios’s 2023 list described a “menu of American bar food, like fried pickles, nachos, burgers.”
The record: 99.5, grade A, June 17, 2026. Its own site lists Monday as closed, Tuesday through Saturday 11 AM to 11 PM, and Sunday noon to 10 PM.
2. Provisions Waxhaw
Provisions, at 107 West South Main Street, is part market and part kitchen, and its site lists breakfast and lunch daily from 7 AM to 3 PM. It ties Mary O’Neill’s and Emmet’s on two editorial pieces and wins the tie on age. One conflict: its About page says it was “originally established in 2016,” yet Axios Charlotte’s August 12, 2015 piece already describes “Provisions Local Market” on Main Street selling “sandwiches (the egg salad looks incredible), soups, and salads.” I’ve credited the earlier, dated source. The same About page says Kat and Jamie Richardson bought the business in January 2022.
The record: 100, grade A, September 14, 2026, one of only two perfect latest scores in the top ten.
3. Mary O’Neill’s Irish Pub
Mary O’Neill’s is at 116 West North Main Street. Axios’s 2023 list named it, and WSOC’s July 6, 2026 report on downtown Waxhaw included it: “When Mary O’Neill’s Irish Pub opened up nine years ago, the owners were taking a chance.” That dates it to about 2017, which places it third on the age tiebreak.
The record: 96, grade A, June 16, 2026. Its own page shows it open every day, Monday through Thursday 11 AM to midnight, Friday 11 AM to 2 AM, Saturday 10 AM to 2 AM and Sunday 10 AM to midnight. Axios described it as “open until 2am every night” in 2023; the pub’s current page says that’s true only on Friday and Saturday.
4. Emmet’s Social Table
Emmet’s is at 401 East South Main Street, “just a few blocks south” of Maxwell’s in Charlotte Magazine’s telling. Charlotte Magazine’s food tour described its “Southern-inspired small plates” and a room where “every table and barstool is taken,” and Axios’s 2023 list called it an “American tapas-style restaurant.” That’s two pieces, like the two above it, but you’ll see it fourth because the earliest date I could verify is its first archived inspection, August 12, 2021; the magazine page carries no date.
The record: 96.5, grade A, June 17, 2026. Its own page lists it open daily from 11:30 AM, until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday and 9 PM otherwise.
5. Cork & Ale
Cork & Ale, at 113 East North Main Street, calls itself “a wine bar, taproom, and restaurant” on its own site, and Axios’s 2023 list singled out “a covered side patio and a large wine selection” with “light bites, like tacos and flatbreads.” One editorial piece puts it fifth, and its archived county record reaches back to December 10, 2019, the earliest of your ten.
The record: 100, grade A, April 9, 2026. It’s closed Sunday and Monday, and food service ends at 9 PM on open nights. The county file lists the address as 113 E North St rather than North Main, a small mismatch you’ll see if you search the portal.
6. Hacienda El Rey
Hacienda El Rey is the first of the ten outside downtown, at 3901 Providence Road South in a shopping center on NC 16 (Providence Road, the main route from Waxhaw north toward Charlotte). No outlet in the recognition set named it, so it ranks on age: its own About page says it was “Founded in 2000,” the earliest date any eligible restaurant claims, and describes “fresh authentic Mexican cuisine.”
The record: 94, grade A, August 31, 2026, the lowest in your top ten and still an A. One hole: the About page says “Open six days a week,” while the hours on the same site cover all seven, so call before you go.
7. Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ
Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ is at 2538-B Cuthbertson Road, in the same Cuthbertson Road strip as the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 2520. Its own page describes “slow-smoked barbecue favorites including pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, chicken.” Its archived county record reaches back to June 10, 2020, earlier than anything below it.
The record: 99.5, grade A, September 24, 2026. Its page lists pickup and delivery hours, 11 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday and to 7 PM Sunday, and no dine-in hours, so plan on takeout.
8. Asian Grill
Asian Grill is at 3913 Providence Road South, in the same NC 16 center as Hacienda El Rey and Bistro D’Antonio, and its menu page leans on hibachi plates and chef’s specialties. The last three spots go to restaurants whose county record starts in 2021, and Asian Grill leads that group on score.
The record: 99.5, grade A, September 24, 2026. The hours block on its page contradicts itself: it lists “Monday 4:00pm – 9:00pm” and, directly after, “Sunday – Thursday 11:00am – 9:00pm.” If you’re going on a Monday, go for dinner.
9. Stacks Kitchen
Stacks Kitchen is at 1315 North Broome Street, next to the Food Lion at 1301 and well north of Main Street. Its site describes “fluffy pancakes and stacked-high breakfast platters” alongside lunch, and it’s open every day from 6 AM to 3 PM. It’s the one small local group in your top ten.
The record: 99, grade A, April 20, 2026, which edges it past Bistro D’Antonio in the 2021 group by half a point.
10. Bistro D’Antonio
Bistro D’Antonio is at 3909 Providence Road South and describes itself as “Italian Inspired Cuisine” on its own site, which also carries wine dinners and a Sunday brunch.
The record: 98.5, grade A, June 24, 2026. It’s closed Monday. Its page shows two hours blocks that disagree on Sunday brunch (10 AM in one, 11 AM in the other), though both start dinner at 4 PM Tuesday through Sunday.
Just outside the ten. The other seven, in order, are Capricci’s True Italian and Queens South Bar & Grill (both on the record by 2021, at 93 and 90.5), Vera’s Kitchen (on the record by November 2022, 98.5), Adela’s Mexican Kitchen (by October 2023, 97.5), then three with no year the record can show, by score: Jebena Cafe (99), Sip and Cinder (96.5) and Siano’s Pizza and Pasta (96).

What the county record shows that review sites miss
The county record shows three things a star average can’t: which permits have gone quiet, which portal is current, and which restaurants don’t publish their own hours. Here’s what the September 27, 2026 check of all 57 Waxhaw restaurant permits turned up, and I’d read it first if you’re using any other list.
Nine permits have no inspection in the past year. They are Blue Door Deli and Market (last inspected February 24, 2025), Capricci’s older permit (January 15, 2025), China II (November 21, 2024), Fresh Express (June 4, 2025), the Harris Teeter #182 Starbucks counter (February 12, 2025), Kin Steak and Sushi (February 4, 2025), Moe’s Southwest Grill #1050 (November 6, 2024), Rosati’s Pizza (December 20, 2024) and Veggeez (June 10, 2025). At four of those addresses the portal now shows a different business with a current inspection: Carolina Charcuterie and Catering, Food Geeks Eatery, Chez Marie and Sip and Cinder.
Why would a closed restaurant still show up? A North Carolina food permit follows the owner. The state rule on permits, 15A NCAC 18A .2659, says: “Upon transfer of ownership of an existing food establishment, the regulatory authority shall complete an evaluation.” A new owner goes through a new permit, and the old permit’s record stays on the portal with its last inspection date. It’s also why a permit’s age isn’t a restaurant’s age: Provisions’ first archived inspection is February 2022, the month after its current owners bought it.
The older portal stopped in April 2024. The older CDP public portal for Union County still loads and still looks official. Filter it for any inspection after April 10, 2024 and it returns zero rows, countywide. The county’s current record is on its My Health Department portal, and every score you see here comes from it.
Nine restaurants hold a current permit but no current hours I could confirm on a page of their own. Crossroads Grill has no website of its own that I could find. G.R.I.T.S. Home Cookin’ and Java’s Brewing Bakery and Cafe have social pages only, and a social feed isn’t treated as a record here.
The website for Ice Cream and Pizza Works returns a not-found page, even though the county inspected the restaurant on October 22, 2025. Jekyl and Hyde Taphouse’s site reads “Coming Soon” while the county inspected it on June 8, 2026. Carolina Charcuterie and Catering and Food Geeks Eatery publish menus but no hours, and I couldn’t confirm current hours for Ming Fu or Chez Marie either. None of that means they’re closed. It means you should call first.
Downtown Waxhaw or the Providence Road corridor?
Five of the ten best restaurants in Waxhaw by this method are downtown, and five are out on NC 16, Cuthbertson Road and North Broome Street. Downtown here means an address on North Main or South Main Street, and the top five all have one.
That split isn’t an accident of the method. Every restaurant named in the recognition set is downtown, so downtown restaurants are the ones with a paper trail, and the method rewards a paper trail. If you’re picturing a Saturday walking Main Street and staying for dinner, that’s the top half. If you’re picturing a quick weeknight meal, you’re likelier to end up at the NC 16 center that holds Hacienda El Rey, Asian Grill and Bistro D’Antonio side by side, or at the Rock Store on Cuthbertson Road.
For a sense of how downtown fits into an ordinary week, our post on what a normal week in Waxhaw looks like walks through it, and our post on Waxhaw’s downtown park on Givens Street covers the park itself. Planning around a festival? Our list of confirmed fall events has the downtown dates. Traffic is a real tradeoff: WSOC’s July 2026 report quoted former town commissioner Joyce Blythe saying “traffic is terrible,” and our post on who Waxhaw doesn’t suit covers the rest.
If you’re coming down to look at houses, here’s how I’d use this list. Book your Saturday showings, then end the day downtown at one of the top five and walk the length of Main Street after dinner, because that walk will tell you more about whether Waxhaw fits than any listing photo. And before you go anywhere on this list, click the county score link. It takes ten seconds, and it’s the county’s own record.
Talk to a local broker
Weighing Waxhaw against Weddington, Marvin or Fort Mill?
A quick call with a broker who works these towns every week, about how each one lives day to day.
Book a 15-minute call →What does an A grade tell you?
An A grade tells you a Waxhaw restaurant scored at least 90 on its latest Union County inspection, and little more. North Carolina’s grading rule, 15A NCAC 18A .2662, sets it out: a score of at least 90 percent earns an A, 80 to under 90 a B, and 70 to under 80 a C, and a score below 70 means the permit is revoked.
The score comes from points deducted on a state form for things like handwashing, food temperatures and clean surfaces. It’s a snapshot of one visit, not a verdict on the cooking, and all 17 eligible restaurants carry an A.
Two details are worth knowing when you read the portal. First, a restaurant can ask to be re-graded: the state’s inspection rule, 15A NCAC 18A .2661, says a restaurant “that requests an inspection for the purpose of raising the alphabetical grade” gets an unannounced visit within 15 calendar days. Two Waxhaw restaurant permits show a latest visit labeled “Re-Inspection,” including Queens South Bar & Grill at 90.5 on July 28, 2026, and the portal doesn’t say why. Second, the portal shows the latest visit, so a great score from last spring is still last spring.
The one B you’ll find among Waxhaw restaurant permits inspected in the past year belongs to Java’s Brewing Bakery and Cafe, at 87 on December 2, 2025, and it missed the eligible 17 on the hours check anyway.
Where this list falls short
This ranking has three blind spots you should weigh. First, recognition favors downtown and age. Every restaurant the recognition set names is downtown, so a newer place on Providence Road can’t earn that credit, and a newer place like Sip and Cinder, in a space whose previous permit was last inspected in June 2025, can’t win the age tiebreak either.
Second, the archive date is a floor. Asian Grill, Stacks Kitchen and Bistro D’Antonio all show a first archived inspection in late summer 2021, when most of the county’s archived records begin, and any of them may be years older. If one publishes its opening year, the order could shift, and I’d update the list.
Third, the method can’t see whether you’ll like the food. Nothing here measures flavor, service or price, and I left prices out because not every restaurant publishes a priced menu. Use this list to know where to start, then let dinner decide the rest.
If you’d like a look at downtown before you visit, Steve’s video on how it’s changing is below.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Restaurants in Waxhaw NC
What are the best restaurants in Waxhaw NC?
Ranked from public records rather than star ratings, the top ten runs from a Main Street tavern at number one through Provisions Waxhaw, an Irish pub, a small plates restaurant and a wine bar, then Hacienda El Rey, Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ, Asian Grill, Stacks Kitchen and an Italian bistro. The list was built on September 27, 2026 from 57 Union County restaurant permits with a Waxhaw address, and all ten carry an A.
Where can I find Union County NC restaurant inspection grades?
The current Union County record is on the My Health Department portal run for Union County Environmental Health, at inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/ucnc. The older CDP public portal still loads, but on September 27, 2026 it showed no Union County inspection after April 9, 2024.
How are NC restaurant sanitation scores calculated?
Inspectors deduct points on a state inspection form for violations such as handwashing, food temperature and clean surfaces. Under rule 15A NCAC 18A .2662, a score of 90 or higher earns an A, 80 to under 90 a B, 70 to under 80 a C, and a score below 70 means the permit is revoked.
What restaurants are open now in Waxhaw NC?
Among the top ten, the pages of the Irish pub, the small plates restaurant, Provisions Waxhaw, Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ and Stacks Kitchen list seven days of hours. The tavern and the Italian bistro list Monday as closed, and the wine bar lists Sunday and Monday as closed. Check each page before you go, because three of the ten show hours that conflict with themselves.
What kind of food is available in Waxhaw NC?
The ten ranked restaurants cover American tavern food, breakfast and lunch counters, an Irish pub, Southern-inspired small plates, a wine bar with light bites, Mexican, smoked barbecue, hibachi and Italian. The other eligible restaurants add Ethiopian coffee and New York style pizza.

What we dropped. Butch Garden Cafe and the Waxhaw location of Katrina’s Mexican Grill appear on map listings but not under those names on the county portal, so they aren’t counted either way. Left out under the recognition rule: Livability’s July 10, 2026 Waxhaw restaurant guide (a national relocation site) and the Post and Courier’s Sip and Cinder opening story. Counting Livability would swap Queens South Bar & Grill and Siano’s Pizza and Pasta in for Hacienda El Rey and Waxhaw Rock Store BBQ. No drive times, prices or star ratings are used anywhere here.
