Waxhaw NC Things to Do: 7 of the Top 10 Are Free

If you’ve typed Waxhaw NC things to do into a search bar, you’ve probably seen the same short list on every page: the downtown, the museum, a park or two. It’s true those are real places worth your time. But when I opened each owner’s own website on September 27, 2026 and counted what they say is actually there, the place with the most to do was Cane Creek Park, a Union County park 6.7 straight line miles from downtown with 13 listed features, and 7 of the top 10 cost nothing to walk into.

The Short Answer

These are the ten places within 7 straight line miles of downtown Waxhaw that you can walk into without a membership, run by the Town, Union County, a state park system or a community group, ranked by how many features each owner lists.

Key numbers, Waxhaw NC, checked September 27, 2026 (sources: Town of Waxhaw, Union County, South Carolina State Parks, JAARS, Museum of the Waxhaws):

  • 23 candidates screened; 10 cleared every test
  • Number 1: Cane Creek Park, 13 listed features on 1,050 acres around a 350 acre lake
  • 7 of the 10 are free for you to enter all year
  • Cane Creek Park: you pay $4 per vehicle March to October, nothing November to February
  • Museum of the Waxhaws: Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., $10 for adults
  • Andrew Jackson State Park: $3 for adults, 6.9 straight line miles away in South Carolina

Below you’ll find the ten in order, the hours and fees each owner posts, how far each one sits from the corner of Broome Street and South Main Street, and how the count works, so you can check it yourself. You’ll also see what didn’t make the list and why, including two places most lists put near the top.

What This Story Covers

The short answer on Waxhaw NC things to do

Cane Creek Park ranks first with 13 features on Union County’s own page, the Town of Waxhaw’s Downtown Park is second with 12, and Andrew Jackson State Park, just across the South Carolina line, is third with 10. Seven of the ten are free to enter all year. If you’re planning around anything, plan around the two museums: the Museum of the Waxhaws opens only on Fridays and Saturdays, and the JAARS Alphabet Museum is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Here’s why I built this list the way I did. Most Waxhaw lists you’ll find are the same attractions in a different order, and none of them say how the order was decided. So I skipped the star ratings and opened each owner’s page instead. What surprised me was how easily other answers drift from those pages. One AI answer I checked on September 27, 2026 had the JAARS museum open on Mondays and gave the skate park clock hours the Town doesn’t post. JAARS posts Tuesday to Saturday, and the Town posts 8 a.m. to dusk, 1 p.m. on Sundays. Before you plan a Saturday around any of these, check the owner’s page that week, because hours change first.

How did we decide the order?

The order comes from counting. For each place I opened the page the owner publishes, counted the amenities and activities it lists, and ranked by that count. Ties went to the place open more full days a week, then to the cheaper one, then to the closer one. Everything was checked on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

Here’s the scope. A place qualified if it sits within 7 straight line miles of Broome Street and South Main Street, is run by the Town of Waxhaw, Union County, a state park system, or a nonprofit or community organization, and is open to you without a membership. Private businesses are out. Parks run by other towns are named further down so you can compare them, but they aren’t ranked, because they belong on those towns’ lists.

Why a distance and an operator instead of a Waxhaw address? Because a Waxhaw address doesn’t mean Waxhaw. ZIP codes follow mail routes, not town limits: the Village of Marvin puts its own hall at 10006 Marvin School Road, Marvin, NC 28173, the same ZIP as downtown Waxhaw, and Union County’s address records list Cane Creek Park and the JAARS campus as unincorporated even though both carry Waxhaw mailing addresses.

The search turned up 23 candidates: 10 places or facilities the Town names on its parks pages, 2 run by Union County, 1 state park, 5 run by nonprofits or community organizations, and 5 parks run by other towns or by Lancaster County, South Carolina. Thirteen came out. Five are other jurisdictions’ parks. Three are Town items with no posted hours or amenity list of their own: the Meeting Place rental room, an event space and a contemplative garden. One is the Twelve Mile Creek Greenway, whose trailheads sit inside two ranked parks. Four don’t count on the same scale: the library, the farmers market, the downtown district and the Storefront Theatre. That leaves your ten.

The counting rule: every amenity or activity on the owner’s page counts once, and a plural counts once, so four ball fields is one item. I skipped parking, security cameras, official designations and one day annual events. Each counted item is named in its entry, so you can recount any of them. Distance is straight line miles from Google’s geocoded coordinates for each owner’s published address. Road miles run longer, and you won’t find drive times here because none were measured. One downside: a count rewards a thorough web page, which is why every entry shows its items.

Numbers 1 to 3: the three biggest days out

The top three have the most to do, and two of them are a drive from anywhere in Waxhaw: Cane Creek Park at 6.7 straight line miles and Andrew Jackson State Park at 6.9, per coordinates computed September 27, 2026. The Downtown Park is the exception at 0.2 miles.

Waxhaw NC things to do, counted: 7 of the top 10 places are free to enter all year, number 1 Cane Creek Park lists 13 features and sits 6.7 miles from downtown, and the Museum of the Waxhaws opens 2 days a week.
The count in one card: 7 of 10 free all year, 13 features at Cane Creek Park, and a museum open 2 days a week. Checked September 27, 2026.

1. Cane Creek Park (Union County, 6.7 miles)

Cane Creek Park is 1,050 acres around a 350 acre lake at 5213 Harkey Road, and Union County’s page lists more to do there than anywhere else in this search. The 13 counted items, as the county lists them: fishing; boating; hiking; picnic areas; canoe, kayak and jon boat rentals; ball fields; playgrounds; disc golf; and multiuse mountain bike and horse trails, all year round. Then swimming, pedal boats and miniature golf in the summer season, Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. And shelters and picnic pads, which you can rent or use first come, first served.

Here’s what trips people up: entry is $4 per vehicle from March through October and free from November through February, per the county’s fee page. An annual vehicle permit is $40 for Union County residents and $60 for everyone else, and residents 65 and older can get a free lifetime Senior Permit in person at the park. The county pages I read don’t post gate hours, so check before an early or late visit. If you have a Union County library card, the library lists a Cane Creek pass that admits one vehicle and trailer, covers up to six people and includes an activity pass, limited to one every 365 days.

2. Waxhaw Downtown Park (Town of Waxhaw, 0.2 miles)

The Downtown Park at 301 Givens Street has the highest count inside the town limits. The Town’s list: an all natural interactive stream, art sculpture and enrichment, a fitness area, a pump track, a sport and flex court with a basketball tree, an amphitheatre for performing arts, movie nights, summer concerts, nature education and walking paths. The same section names picnic pods and nature themed playgrounds, which makes 12.

It’s free and open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November 2 through March 7 and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in spring and summer, closed 8 to 10 a.m. every Wednesday for maintenance. The Downtown Waxhaw Association’s report for fiscal year 2025 lists a 2024 Main Street Award of Merit for design for this park. For the full tour, see our walkthrough of the Downtown Park on Givens Street.

3. Andrew Jackson State Park (South Carolina, 6.9 miles)

This one is in Lancaster County, South Carolina, at 196 Andrew Jackson Park Road. South Carolina State Parks lists 10 things counted here: a museum, the Anna Hyatt Huntington statue “Boy of the Waxhaws,” an 18th century replica schoolhouse, living history programs, an 18 acre lake for boating and fishing, two one mile loop trails, 25 campsites, two picnic shelters, a meeting house and an amphitheater. I left out two items from its “by the numbers” box, the presidential homeplace designation and a birthday celebration each March.

You’ll find it open daily, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November through March and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from April through October. The museum inside keeps shorter hours, weekends 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for South Carolina seniors, $1 for ages 6 to 15, and free for 5 and under. One conflict you’ll notice: South Carolina calls this a presidential homeplace, while the Museum of the Waxhaws says it’s undetermined which state Andrew Jackson was born in, only that it was near Waxhaw on March 15, 1767.

Numbers 4 and 5: two museums on very different clocks

Waxhaw’s two museums rank fourth and fifth, and what separates them for you is the calendar. The JAARS Alphabet Museum is free and open five days a week; the Museum of the Waxhaws charges $10 for adults and opens two days a week, per each museum’s page on September 27, 2026.

4. JAARS Alphabet Museum (JAARS, 4.2 miles)

JAARS is an organization that, in its own words, supports mission work in the most remote places on earth, and its museum is two free buildings on Davis Road. The Pittman Building at 6409 Davis Road covers the world’s writing systems with hands on exhibits, including the sounds of Arabic and Cherokee, along with its alphabet, literacy and Bible translation work. Next door, the Cardenas Building at 6403 walks you through the history of JAARS, with airplane and boat models, an antique car and a “flying” helicopter.

The 8 counted items: the Cardenas Building, the Pittman Building, the Townsend Meditation Garden, guided tours, a treasure hunt for younger visitors, a gift shop, a café open weekdays only, and the Alphabet Museum at night on select Friday evenings. You can visit the Pittman Building Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Cardenas Building 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the same days. Both close on a posted list of holidays, so check before you go.

5. Museum of the Waxhaws (0.6 miles)

The Museum of the Waxhaws at 8215 Waxhaw Highway is run by the Andrew Jackson Historical Foundation, a private nonprofit, and it covers the region from the Waxhaw people through the early 1900s. The 7 counted items: the main exhibit room, the Secrest Homestead, the Nesbit Smokehouse, replicas of Waxhaw Indian dwellings, a gold panning and gem mining area with a replica arrastra, an herb garden, and paths across the grounds. The main room runs through eight themes, and you’ll see an 1814 Conestoga wagon and a cotton gin.

Now the schedule. The homepage says it’s open Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last admission at 4 p.m. Its About page still says three days a week; the homepage carries current hours, so plan on two. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, military and educators, $5 for ages 5 to 14, and free for 4 and under. The grounds aren’t part of the public parks system, you pay admission to walk them, and they’re closed when the museum is. Its auditorium seats 91, and the Storefront Theatre, a readers theatre company, performs its shows at the museum. For dated events there, see our list of confirmed South Charlotte fall events.

If you’re trying to get a feel for Waxhaw from this list, I’d use it as a weekend plan rather than a ranking. I’d start on a Saturday morning downtown: in season the farmers market opens at 9, the Museum of the Waxhaws opens at 10, and three of the ten sit within a quarter mile of Broome and South Main. Then I’d spend Sunday at one of the two big ones, Cane Creek Park or the state park. That pairing shows you both halves of the count, the walkable center and the destinations you’ll drive to, and that split is what should shape how close to downtown you look.

Numbers 6 to 10: the parks you’d use on a Tuesday

The bottom half is five free Town of Waxhaw facilities with 5 or 6 listed features each, three of them within 0.6 straight line miles of downtown. They’re the places you’d use on an ordinary weekday, per the Town’s pages checked September 27, 2026.

6. David G. Barnes Children’s Park (0.1 miles)

A one acre neighborhood park at 215 West South Main Street, next to the historic downtown and a short walk from an ice cream shop. The 6 counted items: playgrounds for toddler and school aged children, bathrooms, a small picnic shelter, greenspace, benches and foliage. It’s open sunrise to dusk every day, and it won its tie with the skate park because it opens at sunrise on Sundays too.

7. Waxhaw Sk8 Park (0.1 miles)

The skate park at 201 Caldwell Street lists a half pipe, a quarter pipe, decking, rails, ramps and a bowl, 6 items. You can skate Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to dusk and Sunday from 1 p.m. to dusk, but it’s closed whenever the surface is wet, and freestyle bikes are allowed only at Town hosted bike events.

8. Town Creek Park (2.1 miles)

A 19 acre community park at 4240 Waxhaw-Marvin Road with a playground, a pavilion, a butterfly garden, rentable greenspace and a trailhead to the Carolina Thread Trail, 5 items, open sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. The paved Twelve Mile Creek Greenway section starts here, and the Carolina Thread Trail notes it works for strollers, road bikes and mobility devices. It tied Nesbit Park on everything but distance, 2.1 miles to 2.2.

9. H.C. Nesbit Park (2.2 miles)

A 40 acre sports park at 1304 H.C. Nesbit Park Drive, next to Kensington Elementary School, open sunrise to dusk. The Town lists baseball fields, softball fields, multipurpose fields, lit fields and picnic tables, 5 items. The reason to know it is at the back: the Town says that’s where you’ll find the trail to the Cross-State Suspension Bridge, a 170 foot bridge about a quarter mile walk in, with 3.5 more miles of natural surface trail beyond it.

10. Waxhaw Recreation Barn (0.6 miles)

The Recreation Barn at 5412 Waxhaw-Marvin Road lists active recreational areas, indoor and outdoor synthetic turf fields, two baseball and softball pitching bays, rental space and internal programs, 5 items. It ranks tenth on open days: weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed noon to 1, plus Rec Barn Fun Days on select Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Town says open play is free during those hours.

Living in Waxhaw NC [Downtown Lifestyle Tour]. It’s here because three of these ten places sit within a quarter mile of downtown.

Why aren’t the library and farmers market ranked?

Both are worth knowing, but neither counts on the same scale as a park, so ranking them by features would give you a wrong answer. Owner pages checked September 27, 2026.

The Southwest Regional Library at 1720 Cuthbertson Road is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday, per the Union County Public Library’s hours calendar. What a library offers is programs that change week to week, not a fixed amenity list. There’s a full rundown in our guide to the Southwest Regional Library in Waxhaw.

The Waxhaw Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, April through December, at 27283 Waxhaw Parkway. It calls 2026 its 24th season and itself a producer only market, lists its season as April 18 through December 22, and names 36 full time and 12 part time vendors. It takes SNAP and EBT through tokens and asks you to leave pets at home, service animals excepted. It isn’t ranked because what it lists is vendors, not amenities, and counting 48 vendors as 48 features would put a three hour market above a 1,050 acre park.

Downtown Waxhaw’s Main Street district is the setting for three ranked parks rather than one place with its own list. The Downtown Waxhaw Association, the nonprofit that runs the Main Street program, reports a 0% commercial vacancy rate, 6 businesses opened and 36 new jobs for fiscal year 2025, July 2024 through June 2025. The Storefront Theatre runs dated performances rather than open hours, so it sits under the museum, and the Twelve Mile Creek Greenway sits under Town Creek and Nesbit, whose parks hold its trailheads.

Just over the line: five parks other towns run

Five more parks within 7 straight line miles are run by a neighboring town or by Lancaster County, South Carolina. They aren’t ranked, but you’ll use them if you live near them. Owner pages checked September 27, 2026.

  • Marvin Efird Park, Village of Marvin, 5.2 miles. At 8909 New Town Road since May 5, 2012, with a 9 hole disc golf course, playgrounds, 32 raised garden beds, picnic areas and walking trails. Closed four days a year.
  • Houston Ross Park, Village of Marvin, 6.1 miles. Its ribbon cutting was set for Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 10006 Marvin School Road. No hours or amenity list posted yet; the backstory is in our look at which new South Charlotte parks are open.
  • Dogwood Park, Village of Wesley Chapel, 5.6 miles. 22.5 acres at 121 Lester Davis Road, open dawn to dusk, with a fishing pier, a dog park and a miniature golf course. Large events are paused during a dam reconstruction project.
  • Walnut Creek Park, Lancaster County, South Carolina, 3.4 miles. 60 acres of ball fields, tennis courts and playgrounds, and the South Carolina end of the trail across the suspension bridge from Nesbit Park.
  • Mineral Springs Greenway, Town of Mineral Springs, about 2.5 miles. Natural surface trails for hikers, bikers and horseback riders off McNeely Road, per a 2016 brochure the town still links. Distance is to the middle of McNeely Road.

What does the count change if you’re choosing where to live?

The count splits Waxhaw’s things to do into two groups, and that split is what matters when you’re picking a street. Three of the ten sit within a quarter mile of Broome and South Main, and the museum and the Recreation Barn are about 0.6 miles out. Two of the three biggest, Cane Creek and the state park, are more than 6.5 straight line miles away, so from most of Waxhaw they’re a drive.

So if walking to a park, a museum and a Saturday market matters to you, the count points you toward homes near the old downtown. If you’re buying in one of the newer subdivisions farther out, you’ll likely drive to everything here, and your question becomes which direction you’re driving. Those miles are straight line, so measure your own route. Our piece on what a normal week in Waxhaw looks like covers the car side of that tradeoff.

One more thing the count won’t tell you: the museums are the only places here with real schedule limits, so if your weekends fill up fast, put those two on your calendar first.

How we sourced this

Every hour, fee, address and feature count here comes from the owner’s own page, opened September 27, 2026. Review stars from Google, Yelp and Tripadvisor were left out because they measure popularity, not what’s there. AI search answers helped find candidates, and none is the source for any fact here.

Distances are straight line miles from Broome Street at South Main Street, computed from Google Geocoding API coordinates for each owner’s published address. What we left out: gate hours for Cane Creek, which the county pages we read don’t post, and any visitor counts or crowd levels, because no owner publishes them.
