How this ranking works
This ranking starts from the 127 places serving meals that 15 Google business searches returned inside the Monroe city line on November 2, 2026, and it keeps only the ones that clear four checks. You can repeat each check yourself, and none of them is a judgment call about taste. Here they are in order.
First, the city line. Fifteen Google business searches, from “restaurants in Monroe NC” to barbecue, breakfast, pizza and sushi, returned 127 places that serve meals and whose map pin falls inside the City of Monroe boundary published by the U.S. Census Bureau. Coffee shops, bakeries, ice cream shops and taprooms were set aside for the downtown section, because their main business isn’t a meal.
Second, the Google record. You’d want a place plenty of people have tried, so a place needed a rating of 4.5 or better across at least 300 Google reviews. Of the 127, 68 had 300 or more reviews, and 16 of those also had a 4.5 or better.
Third, no chains, since you can find those anywhere. Independent here means a restaurant that doesn’t show a second location under its name in Google’s listings for the Charlotte region or on its own website. That removed The Smoke Pit, which has 2,223 reviews and a 4.5, because its own website lists six North Carolina locations.
Fourth, the county record. Each remaining restaurant needed a grade A, a score of 90 or more, on its latest inspection by Union County Environmental Health. One restaurant that met every other check had a B on its latest inspection, so it isn’t on this list. That leaves 14, and you can open each one’s report from the links below. The top 10 are ordered by Google review count, the plainest public measure of how many people have eaten somewhere and cared enough to say so. Nobody paid to be on this list.

The 10 best restaurants in Monroe NC, one by one
Hours come from each Google listing or the restaurant’s own site on November 2, 2026, and they change, so you’ll want to call ahead on a holiday.
1. Palace Restaurant
Palace Restaurant at 1000 Lancaster Avenue has more Google reviews than any other local restaurant that cleared this list’s checks: 1,177, with a 4.6 rating. Google lists it as an American restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. It opens at 7 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, stays open until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, and closes at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It’s closed Mondays.
Union County Environmental Health scored Palace 97.5 on October 8, 2026. Why it’s here: it’s the most-reviewed restaurant on the list by almost 270 reviews, and it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday.
2. Koumi Express
Koumi Express at 2259 West Roosevelt Boulevard is the one Japanese restaurant in the top 10, with a 4.5 rating across 909 Google reviews. Its own website calls it a fast food restaurant serving authentic Japanese cuisine, from appetizers to entrees, kabobs and soba noodles “cooked on the hibachi grill,” and if you’re in a hurry, Google’s listing notes a drive-thru window.
The site lists hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and it’s closed Mondays. The county scored it 99 on August 18, 2026. Why it’s here: it’s one of three in the top 10, with Gus and East Frank, open until 9 p.m. or later six nights a week.
3. Franklin Court Grille
Franklin Court Grille at 232 East Franklin Street is the highest-ranked downtown restaurant on this list, with a 4.6 rating across 880 Google reviews. It’s on the City of Monroe’s own list of downtown places to dine. The restaurant’s website says “our fryers are gluten free” and calls its courtyard “a favorite summer hangout,” and it introduces the family behind it, the Oropesas.
It’s open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it’s closed Sunday and Monday. The county scored it 97.5 on September 17, 2026. Why it’s here: it’s the downtown pick with a courtyard, and Google notes outdoor seating.
4. Duke’s Grill
Duke’s Grill at 1114 Concord Avenue carries a 4.6 rating across 816 Google reviews. Google lists it as an American restaurant. It opens at 10:30 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and it’s closed Sunday and Monday, so if you want an early breakfast, you’ll need another stop.
The county scored Duke’s 99 on October 22, 2026, one of the two most recent inspections in the top 10. Why it’s here: 816 reviewers put it at 4.6, and its 99 is one of three in the top 10, behind only Jud’s perfect 100.
5. Ron’s Grill
Ron’s Grill at 3621 Old Charlotte Highway has a 4.5 rating across 743 Google reviews, and it’s one of four in the top 10 open on Mondays. Google lists it as a family restaurant. It opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday and closes at 2 p.m., and it’s closed Sundays, so you’ll want to come for breakfast or an early lunch.
The county scored it 99 on October 7, 2026. Why it’s here: when 6 of the top 10 take Monday off, Ron’s is serving breakfast at 6 a.m.
6. Jud’s Restaurant
Jud’s Restaurant sits in the Monroe Plaza Shopping Center at 1603 West Roosevelt Boulevard, with a 4.6 rating across 734 Google reviews. Google lists it as a family restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. It opens at 6 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, stays open until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday, runs 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, and it’s closed Mondays.
If you care most about the county record, Jud’s earned a perfect 100 on October 13, 2026, the only perfect latest score in the top 10. Why it’s here: it’s one of two places on the list, with Gus, where you can get breakfast before 7 a.m. and still find the kitchen open at dinner on a weekday.
7. Village Grill
Village Grill at 1730 Dickerson Boulevard, Suite J, has a 4.5 rating across 733 Google reviews. Google’s listing describes it as serving “traditional, homestyle American, Greek & Italian dishes.” It’s open every day from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and it’s one of three in the top 10 open all seven days.
The county scored it 96 on August 26, 2026; the record files it as The Village Grill. Why it’s here: if you need breakfast on a Sunday or a Monday, it’s open at 7 a.m. both days.
8. Gus Family Restaurant
Gus Family Restaurant at 1627 Walkup Avenue has a 4.6 rating across 689 Google reviews, and it keeps the longest hours on the list. Its website and Google listing show 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, and if you’re bringing a group, the site says it takes party and group reservations.
The county record files it as Gus’ Family Restaurant and scored it 93.5 on August 10, 2026, still an A and the lowest score in the top 10. Why it’s here: it’s open 16 hours on weekdays, longer than any other restaurant on this list.
9. East Frank Superette and Kitchen
East Frank Superette and Kitchen at 209 East Franklin Street carries a 4.7 rating, the highest in the top 10, across 644 Google reviews. Its website calls it a restaurant and shop in downtown Monroe, and the City of Monroe lists it among downtown places to dine. If you want to sit outside, Google notes outdoor seating, and it serves beer.
It’s open every day: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The county scored it 97.5 on October 22, 2026. Why it’s here: it’s open until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, later than any other restaurant in the top 10.
10. Little Country Kitchen
Little Country Kitchen at 2526 Old Charlotte Highway has a 4.6 rating across 601 Google reviews. Google lists it as an American restaurant. It ties Gus for the earliest opening on the list, at 5 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, and it closes at 2 p.m. those days. On Saturday it’s open 7 a.m. to noon, and it’s closed Sunday and Monday.
The county scored it 96.5 on October 14, 2026. Like Ron’s Grill, it sits on the Old Charlotte Highway side of the city. Why it’s here: if your day starts before dawn, this is where the list starts too.
If you’ve got one day in Monroe, here’s how I’d eat it. Breakfast at Village Grill or Jud’s, then a walk around the old courthouse downtown. Lunch at Franklin Court Grille if the weather is good enough for the courtyard. Then dinner at East Frank, which is open later than most of this list. If it’s a Monday, Jud’s and Franklin Court Grille are closed, so I’d do breakfast at Village Grill or Ron’s Grill, lunch at Gus and dinner at East Frank, since all four are open that day.

Four more Monroe restaurants cleared every check but had fewer reviews than the top 10, so they’re listed here rather than left out. Three of them are downtown.
Mac’s Fish & Chicken, 2399 West Roosevelt Boulevard: 4.5 on Google across 448 reviews, and a county score of 98.5 on October 5, 2026. It’s open 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on weekends, so you’ll need a weekday for this one.
A Cause for Tea, 418 East Franklin Street: 4.8 across 409 reviews, and a perfect 100 on October 7, 2026. Its site describes a historic tea house in downtown Monroe, open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for daily tea service, with weekly Tea Times and private events.
Oasis Sandwich Shop, 116 South Main Street: 4.6 across 365 reviews, and a county score of 98.5 on October 12, 2026, where the record files it as Oasis of Monroe LLC. If you’re downtown at lunch, Google lists it as open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Patty & The Dogs, 217 North Hayne Street: 4.8 across 348 reviews, and a county score of 99.5 on October 22, 2026. Its site offers burger and hot dog bar catering and lists hours to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It’s closed Tuesdays.
Where to eat in downtown Monroe
If you’re walking downtown, you’ll find more places to eat than this ranking shows, because some are coffee shops or taprooms and others have fewer than 300 reviews. The City of Monroe says there are “over 140 businesses in Historic Downtown Monroe,” and its own downtown business listing groups the food and drink spots under “Dine, Eat & Meet.”
From that city list, the full-meal places are Franklin Court Grille, East Frank Superette and Kitchen, A Cause for Tea, Oasis, Patty and the Dogs, Trattoria on Main, Jin Jin, JAMZ and Pizza Exchange. The coffee stops are Alice Jules Coffee House, High Octane Coffee and Sorella Coffee. For a drink, you can try Southern Range Craft Beer, Americana Beer Co., Local Logic, Home Brew Taproom and Tunes, and Vetus Distillery.
Two downtown spots deserve a line of their own. Trattoria on Main at 109 South Main Street serves Italian food and says it makes “handmade fresh pasta”; its site lists Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 7 p.m. It has a 4.5 on Google but only 97 reviews, which is why it isn’t ranked. E.L.K. of Monroe at 301 East Franklin Street is newer: the city announced it on March 25, 2025 as “a new restaurant by owner Jason Hill,” and it now carries a 4.6 across 125 reviews.
If you’d rather drink than dine, Southern Range Brewing calls itself “Monroe’s original craft brewery,” established in 2016, with live music and food trucks every weekend. Americana Beer Company serves a food menu in its downtown taproom on North Main Street.
And you can carry a drink between them. Monroe runs a Social District downtown, where you can walk with a drink bought from a business in or next to the district. The city’s rules allow it Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight. The cup has to carry the Monroe Social District logo and can’t hold more than 16 ounces, and you can’t bring in outside alcohol.
The city’s one-and-a-half-mile greenway loop downtown passes “restaurants to dine in,” the city says, and the guide to what Monroe NC is known for covers what else is downtown.
Big names that missed the line, and why
Some of the most-reviewed restaurants in Monroe aren’t in the top 10, and you’ll want to know why before you assume the list missed them. The answer is the rating line: each one below has more reviews than Palace but a Google rating under 4.5. Here are four that fell short on rating.
Taqueria La Unica, at 1621 Walkup Avenue, has 2,203 Google reviews and a 4.4. Hilltop Fish Fare & Steakhouse on East Roosevelt Boulevard sits at a 4.2 across 2,174. Monterrey of Monroe, at 1006 West Roosevelt, holds a 4.4 across 1,965, and Knife & Fork, at 1201 West Roosevelt, a 4.3 across 1,522. All four are inside the city line.
Two of them miss by a tenth of a star, which is a thin line, but it’s the same line for every restaurant. It doesn’t mean any of those four is a bad meal. The Smoke Pit, at 1507 West Roosevelt Boulevard, would have ranked first by reviews if it weren’t one of six locations.
Then there are the places with high ratings but fewer than 300 reviews. Curry Court at 1701 Morgan Mill Road has a 4.9 across 171 reviews. Taqueria Chuyita at 1850 Williams Road has a 4.7 across 281. Vera’s Kitchen at 1951 Dickerson Boulevard has a 4.7 across 137.
If you’re comparing Monroe with another town, the best restaurants in Waxhaw list is built from the same county inspection record, and the things to do in Indian Trail guide covers the next town west.
When to go: early mornings, 2 p.m. and Mondays
The hours matter more than the order in Monroe, because the top 10 is weighted toward breakfast and lunch. Seven of the ten open by 8 a.m. on every day they’re open: Palace, Ron’s Grill, Jud’s, Village Grill, Gus, East Frank and Little Country Kitchen. Gus and Little Country Kitchen open as early as 5 a.m. on weekdays.
Three of the ten close by 2:30 p.m. on every day they open: Ron’s Grill, Village Grill and Little Country Kitchen. So if you’re planning a late lunch, check the clock before you drive over.
Mondays are the day to plan around. Six of the ten are closed on Monday: Palace, Koumi Express, Franklin Court Grille, Duke’s Grill, Jud’s and Little Country Kitchen. The four open on Monday are Ron’s Grill, Village Grill, Gus and East Frank. On Sundays, four are closed: Franklin Court Grille, Duke’s Grill, Ron’s Grill and Little Country Kitchen.
For dinner after 8 p.m., the top 10 gives you Gus and East Frank every night but Sunday, Koumi Express Tuesday through Sunday, Franklin Court Grille on Friday and Saturday, and Palace on Friday. From the four more, Patty & The Dogs stays open until 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. If you’re spending a full day in the area, the guide to Monroe parks and recreation covers the greenway, the aquatics center and what each one costs.
What does an A grade mean in Union County?
An A grade in Union County means the restaurant scored at least 90 out of 100 on its latest state food code inspection. North Carolina sets the scale in 15A NCAC 18A .2662: at least 90 percent earns an A, 80 to under 90 a B, and 70 to under 80 a C. A score under 70 means the permit is revoked.
You can check any score yourself. State rules require the grade card to hang “in a conspicuous place where it may be readily observed by the public upon entering the food establishment,” and the county posts each inspection on its public inspection portal, where you can search by name and open the report.
Two things are worth knowing as you read one. A score is a snapshot of one visit, and you can open the report to see it. Every top 10 restaurant here scored between 93.5 and 100 on its latest visit, so the grade gate didn’t decide the order. It only decided who could be on the list at all.
Before you drive over, open the restaurant’s Google listing for today’s hours, and if it’s a Monday, start with Village Grill, Ron’s Grill, Gus or East Frank.
